"For anyone who has ever lost a beloved companion, know that they are safe and waiting for you to come get them"
Commission done in memory of a pet who has passed onto the next life. I wanted to convey the theme of ceaseless love and motherly care. I also took references from the Pieta - Mary holding Christ after his crucifixion, and of course references from the statues of Bast that can be found in your local metaphysics shop.
As I was working on this, my mind kept thinking of other themes such as "bosom" and "hymns sung by creole women". I hope none of this is offensive sounding, but there is something about the way Bast seems to be humming to the creature in her arms that makes me feel a connection to the soothing love sung by a mother of African decent.
(And yes, I am having trouble on whether or not to use a hyphenated term like "African-American" or a word like "Black" or "Negro". In absolute truth, I am not sure which is the right word to use. I tried my hardest to put as much research into Bast, Egyptology, and world history to make an appropriate tribute.)
Peace, love, and eternal life.

So many people in today's world think that if you say or do something unintentionally, that you should be punished for it. This is not the case with this picture, I think that even the most hardened 'flamer' on the internet would look at this picture, and not be able to do a damn thing about it. Great work, very touching.
Ah, okay. Well I guess any religious person could tell you "what you're missing", but that doesn't mean they can tell you what's right. That's something you need to discover and decide upon for yourself.
Hey, no worries... it may not have been the most couth place to talk about it, but it's not hurting anyone, so no harm done. If you do want to talk more about it though, feel free to note me - we don't want to become more of a bother here.

*nods* Though my response is very late, I am grateful for the pondering when it's done in a sincere way. Very respectful, and I thank you.
I, too, wonder the same things...is there something, is there nothing, is there one that's right and one that's wrong? Eventually I had to stop worring about it and just be who I am. =)

Definately no need to apologise, I was very delighted to see conversation happen in a respectful way, though I do regret in the lateness of my regards.
I don't know quite what I do believe in, or what really what there is to believe in, but I'll put my cards down and say this...
As an artist I can put religion/spirituality/etc. into this kind of metaphor - When you have an art class where everyone is seated around a still life you get very different drawings of what is there. They all relate to the same thing, but each is different and unique in it's own way.
Religion/spirituality/etc. is essentially that way to me...everyone is looking at the same "thing", but each will have a different interpretation of what "it" is because of their experience and their perspective.

I can really appreciate the way Bast's emotion, gesture and physical form was rendered in this piece. Most of the time, I see Bast drawn alot skinnier and I always have thought she might be more of a motherly figure in lore so I am pleased with how yours came out. Keep it up.

You are welcome.
One thing that I have done only a small effort on has been to volunteer as an artists model in workshops. I do feel that some people may see a more rubenesque model to be a hindrance and I dont think that is so. I think that all bodies should be understood (weight distribution, etc) and that artists should at least TRY new bodytypes out.

Oh you are welcome!
I just love everything about this piece, the composition in just lovely, Bast's expression is warm and loving, her body is perfectly shaped, the essence of motherly beauty. I love her traditional adornments.... Ug I just love it to pieces.
This would be a great print for a sympathy card. <3
