Veshe…Veshe. Mmm…
…Swampsplash, that was her name. It’s Swallowtail nowadays; sounds way cooler, don’tcha think? Sounds like you want to know what happened to the Swamp warband.
Well scorch you, I’m not getting started that mess. More boring than a Flame legion sermon. But all you need to know is that Laxia lost her Ash tribuneship. The great Laxia Swampdrown, with her reputation for risky tactics and taste for dual recon/assassination missions every burning time, finally ran out of luck. One massively botched assault on a Separatist stronghold, and she was challenged by…Raxus Marrowfeast, a centurion under her. Yeah, they fought, but weirdly enough the tribune conclave stopped it midway and stripped her rank right after. Unanimous vote after they saw the after-action report. That’s the official statement, at least. Laxia always sucked at the politics game, and I’m certain at least a third of the tribunes would have wanted a replacement for her. There’s some doubt about who actually drafted the report, and bits of evidence that showed the Separatists were tipped off or reinforced or some garbage, but like I said, it doesn’t matter and it’s all very boring. Laxia lost rank, and things fell apart.
Back then, Swamp was twenty-ish strong with some of the best in the legion for infiltrations. Most of them were one-versus-many type of assassins. You know, the kind to take down a mark and all of the guards as well. Laxia was the master of that. Still is, to be honest. But being demoted back to a legionnaire was…something else. Orders became ridiculously stupid or suicidal, training schedules became erratic. Morale crashed like an airship during the Pact Maguuma launch. Laxia herself seemed to stop caring about everything, and the transfers started rolling in. A few charr hung around due to loyalty reasons, but really, Laxia didn’t deserve a drop after the way she acted. Lashing out randomly at her soldiers, disappearing for days while the rest of Swamp were stranded without orders. I tried meeting up with her a few times to shake the soot out of her brain, but there was only so much I could do back then. It took Veshe leaving to finally get her resolve back.
Veshe was Laxia’s second-in-command, lieutenant, right-paw-charr, whatever. Point is, being the pupil of a damn tribune is a huge deal, and Laxia taught Veshe everything. Every op, every lesson, or every resupply opportunity was presented to Veshe first before the rest of Swamp. She loved her, and it was pretty damn clear Veshe was going to be launched up the legion’s ladder at Laxia’s bidding. So imagine how you would react if your pet project said that she can’t stand your behaviour anymore.
Laxia never told me how Veshe’s departure went. All she says is she got her scrap together afterwards. Never asked Veshe either, considering the Tail warband always seems to take the most distant missions from the citadel. Laxia was a lot more solemn after that. Bitter as Adelbern and hated nearly everyone though, but she didn’t speak much for a while and still gave out orders that weren’t stupid.
I visit some clerical offices occasionally, since I have to make sure Quaestor orders are followed to a tee or to double-check some paperwork. I’ll snag a copy of some Tail warband mission reports while I’m there, as a gift for Laxia. She hasn’t actually told me whether she likes them or not, but I haven’t heard her ask me to stop yet.
Saw her at a leatherworking station in the distance once though, running some errands. She was reading one of the reports…and smiling.
