Red's dad Leonard is a strict father, but he's not one to hurt his son physically. All he did to red was a simple scolding. One of the reasons for this is because he wanted to atone for the sins he committed in his youth... as a member of the mafia.
Right here, Leonard's in his mid-20s, about to execute a guy that has not only broken two of their strongest rules, but also both risked the police learning more about the mafia to arrest them, and having killed a member of another crime gang. This is to avoid any further unnecessary fighting... but the boss isn't ENTIRELY heartless... he did leave the guy one last christmas present after all. He'll get to see his nephew again.
Leonard is no longer accociated with the mafia, as he along with a few others managed to avoid any traces the police followed after the syndicate was disbanded... and as stated before, he's trying to atone for his sins... by making sure his son grow up happy and sin-free.

I would love to say that someone who wasn't caught can find a proper way to move on -- yet I may not be able to say that.
(Moreover, I believe there is only one figure who can atone for sins. I do not believe it is possible to raise anyone to be completely free of sin, while inside a mortal body.)
