One night while trying to fall asleep, my mind wandered and I thought of a little story in my head about a young cow who, with a few others, manages to escape a fire that destroyed their farm. Being an expectant mother, the cow is very dependent on the protection of her company. However, as the small herd wanders through the wilderness, a pack of wolves find it's their lucky day when they spot them and the pregnant cow is separated from the others in the chaos, barely managing to escape the wolves. Not too long after she escapes, she falls into labor and has her calf. The little one is weak, but the mother is determined to support them as much as she can. While she and her young one are on their journey to find a safe place and hopefully a new herd somewhere, the pack of wolves from before manage to find them and attack. With the calf being too weak to run fast enough to escape them, the mother cow is forced to attempt fighting them off. Even if the number of them is few, she still struggles until she finally collapses from exhaustion. As she is out, and the wolves prepare to finish her off, a lone red deer stag comes to the rescue, managing to fight them off.
The mother cow eventually awakens to the red stag watching over her, though she soon realizes the wolves are gone, but so is her child.
She is in agony when she realizes what happened, but the red stag insists that she follow him to his herd which isn't too far away, where she can find safety. Although the cow finds no purpose to her being safe anymore, she manages to get up and follow the stranger with the little will to survive she has left.
In the image, the battle scars from the wolves are fresh on them, although I think during their journey to his herd, they would help groom each other's wounds to keep them from getting infected.
