Yeah... a) You need to put holes or slits in the plastic of the inner diapers so when they leak it's into the absorbent parts of the outer diapers, b) it's also wise to go larger in steps so any leaks out the legs don't bypass the rest of the layers, and c) honestly in my experience it's usually just better to get more absorbent single diapers and/or change more often.

Really, the only layering I do nowadays is either putting a cloth diaper over a disposable to soak up sweat and small amounts of seepage around the legs, or just layering cloth on top of disposable for extra fun thickness and not factoring its absorbency in at all.
