Well there sure is a lot going on in Vizlet's head, isn't there.
Even the most dedicated mother occasionally has indulgent daydreams about getting away from it all with a swarthy swashbuckling sea-captain.
I learned this unmistakable truth from the covers of romance novels.

Oh, totally. Think about it; even though they might begrudge humans for being all superior, they're still tall, strong, smart, long-lived, cultured, graceful beings who control most of the world. Like what elves would be to humans, or sparkle-vampires or something. The basic parts of the brain just start screaming "they are desirable!"
There's plenty of examples of this throughout history, especially in the case of conquered or enslaved populations and their conquerors/slavers. It's a fine example of how our foundational lizard-brains tend to sabotage our higher-order thinking and ideals, often to great distress.

I find it an interesting note that even as she indulges in a fantasy such as this, that even then she doesn't break from her responsibilities. It's a minor detail that she can't simply let go and relax with one of these sorts of dreams without having to subconsciously reassure herself that her Enclave will be fine or that "someone will be sent to take care of them" before she can allow her mind to wander or indulge herself. It's actually a little funny that in this dream she's paired herself with a dashing rogue, a wanderer, but she doesn't romanticize the idea of the adventurers lifestyle. Her "Rogue" mentions that he's well off monetarily and is obviously well groomed and taught her things so he's intelligent. At no point does she say she's had fun in their travels, rather that she's learned many things from him and built a connection with him through that. I get the feeling that this dream is far more than just a random fantasy and speaks a bit more of Vizlet's personal side.
Firstly: She fantasizes about a HUMAN swashbuckler. as humans are higher in society that Yinglets I get the feeling this hints that she feels in some ways superior to Yinglets and deserves a handsome partner higher up in society and in better living arrangements then her people can provide. In such a dream her subconscious could've easily made her lover an attractive, well educated, Yinglet Sea Captain, but she doesn't consider that even in dreams SO I believe that the human is more of a symbol that she seeks greatness and wishes to show she's more than a primitive like the rest of the Enclave. She feels like she'd be more at home with other minds on a similar footing to her own.
Secondly: The fact she can't simply not include the other Yinglets in her dream. Their presence leads me to believe that while she feels like she's above that lifestyle and the others (by the fact they're not worthy to be the object of her affection in the dream) she still takes her responsibilities with them very seriously. I'd even hazard to guess that they represent her pride. Every benefit she gives them, every ounce she elevates them, and every little bit she improves their enclave over others is a sign over her own brilliance and she treats it as such. Thereby she couldn't simply just leave them in the dream, they're her pride and it's a bragging right that they're happy.
Thirdly: This figure of her dreams in a well spoken Sea Captain, he allows her a vehicle with which to explore the world and gather more knowledge. She's fallen for him and the great things he's taught her. This figure of her love IS the chance to learn because he represents a mode of transportation to areas of knowledge. She seeks intellect and a connection with a partner whose worthy of her (as seen by point one in her thoughts that she deserves the best of society) and can help her in her quest of becoming smarter rather than getting in her way.
So I think the ironic thing is that this dream speaks to the exact opposite of it's subject matter. She doesn't want the life of a traveler nor does she romanticize it. She wants the best, because she feels worthy of it for her accomplishments in moving above the other Yinglet. She wants to be on equal footing if not desirable to the most sought after romantic figures of human society! And while it's a nice release from the stress of her job to dream like this, she wants her Enclave to be happy and flourish, if not for the good of them, then as a way for her to show off her own abilities in the quest to uplift her people so she herself can be taken seriously in the face of more developed settlements. I'd almost wager from this that despite the ego that I get from this analysis, that on some level she's deeply insecure and wants very very desperately not to be written off as simply a Yinglet.

Yeah, nice examination of what's going on here! It does indeed take a lot from Vizlet's subconscious and seemingly conflicting wants, mostly for all the reasons you just mentioned; being at the top of her species' society can be lonely. And in terms of higher-order conversation, she has a lot more in common with humans than the rest of her species, however much she strives to uplift them and feels rather responsible for their future.
But hey, nobody ever said an overworked momma couldn't fantasize about getting taken away and pampered by a swarthy swashbuckler.

lol indeed not! And hey, she's so stressed all the time she deserves to indulge herself every now and again. You're exactly right with her being overworked! And I could imagine it would be hard on someone to have to walk in two different worlds like that; wanting to be in the presence of intellectuals and learn from them, but also having to go back to near early cavemen levels. The fact she doesn't just wash her hands of them and run off really does speak worlds about her character and while I might be a little harsh in my psychoanalysis I don't want that to betray my high thoughts of her in the first place. I hope I wasn't too rambly with my big cross section/review but I'm glad you enjoyed it ^w^ It's always cool looking into characters like this because again I absolutely love Vizlet's scenes and her often "I'm so done with this, please hit me in the head with a shoe" expression.
I wouldn't be surprised if Vizlet mary-sued herself into some recreational fiction she wrote about a matriarch nursing a wounded human traveler back to health (without accidentally poisoning or even killing him), finding he was a warrior/scholar, and had pledged his heart to her in gratitude.
Vizlet DO have a dark (or sensual) side to her. Hehehehe, honestly, if I was a human in this world and got to know her, I think I would fall for her mainly cause she definitely have a good head on her shoulders. She's definitely the less yinglet like for a born yinglet. Don't get me wrong though, yinglets are funny....as long I am watching from a distance. :-P
