She was a former medic for the military [retired after becoming pregnant with Leon], but after a war that had lasted several years became really nasty.. they were recruiting more medics, they were running out of options and she ended up volunteering to go, after 3 months in the war, her stationed center was attacked, she was slaughtered.

He was very cruel to Ammi, verbally abusive until later in high school, He began to seek therapy and is currently making an improvement. He's been diagnosed with BPD and Bipolar and is seeking treatment. They're both currently working on their relationship to become closer.
