Venti rested on his stomach while Art rested on his back. The jackal didn't mind the lion's weight, since he exercised with dumbbells far heavier than his boyfriend. "I mean, I went to work, I'd go to the gym," Venti said, "but the longer I tried not to think about the magazine, the more...unsatisfied I became. It felt like there were gray skies outside even though it was sunny. I felt empty. Nothing sounded fun. As soon as I'd go home I'd go to bed."
Art started to dig his fingers into Venti's tense shoulders. He couldn't even make a dent in them. Rock solid muscles. Always a pain when he'd bump into the jackal even when relaxed. "I was starting to get worried."
Venti rubbed his face, sighing. "I know, but I didn't want you to have to deal with me in this kind of state." A sudden slap against the back of his head caused him to look over his shoulder. "Hey! What was that for?"
"To make you wake up and realize what you said was pretty damned dumb, Venti." Art kissed the edge of Venti's ear, nibbling on the skin lightly. "You're my boyfriend, and I'm here regardless of sickness or in health, you understand me?"
Venti found himself grinning at that, exposing his sharp teeth. It felt good to hear those words. "Are you quoting wedding vows to me, Art?"
"They work, even if we're not getting married."
"We're not even living together yet."
"Three more months, hopefully."
Art slowly curled his arms around Venti's neck, making a trail of kisses down to his skull. "Six months at worst."
Venti tilted his head back. His ears were always the best spots for smooches, since they were the most sensitive parts of his body. "Sometimes I'm just tempted to say screw it and convince you to break the lease on your apartment."
"We can't afford that."
We. Not I. Art was already starting to think in terms of plural when making decisions. Something stirred in his chest, a feeling of warm emotion that just needed some encouragement to blossom. "Then let's discuss better things. More fun things."
He didn't feel empty.
