We said goodbye to Puca today.
April 1st 2001 - December 27th 2016
There's a kitty who's sure
All that glitters is lasers
And she's buying a cat tree to heaven.
When she gets there she knows
If the pet stores are closed
With a meow she can get what she came for.
Ooh ooh and she's buying a cat tree to heaven.
I said in my journal I didn't have it in me to talk about her, but screw that.
(No one actually has to read all of this, I just wanted to put together some of my memories of her. But I'm sure all you cat lovers get it.)
Puca was born deaf and found stranded in a gutter as a tiny kitten. She ended up in the kitty foster home run by the grandmother of a friend of mine. When we went over there to look for a kitten, she caught my eye immediately. She was so pretty, and I thought she looked very regal looking down from the top of the highest cat tree, gazing out over her domain and all the other silly kittens below her. XD She had actually been adopted earlier that day and returned an hour later. We couldn't think of what anyone could have against such a sweet, pretty little kitten. It was because of some digestive upset the deworming pill had caused, and that was... quite an event for the first week we had her, lol, but I couldn't imagine giving up a cat for something like that. Their loss. We named her Puca after the Irish spirit, to give her a ghost-ish name.
Puca was a light chaser. I remember when we first brought her home she stayed in my bedroom to get acclimated. I remember waking up with her in my face, and she tried to poke at the light reflected in my eyes. Flashlights and lasers were her favorite things. She would knock over anything that looked remotely like a flashlight in an attempt to turn it on without thumbs. She would gladly spin in circles at top speed all day trying to catch the red dot. A disco ball probably would've been lethal, lol.
Because the dog always stole any physical toys she tried to play with, she got into the habit of playing with her imagination. I think being deaf also added to her living inside her own head a lot of the time. She would make up elaborate stories to herself that made us laugh and stare and wonder what the HECK she was thinking this time! She would also do this weird "baboon walk" where she would arch the base of her tail, flatten her ears completely, and goose step with her front legs. It was hilarious and adorable and that's something I'll really miss seeing.
I also remember the first time she met Rusty. I knew Rusty was a cat person, and I warned him that Puca would generally hide from new people and take a long time to warm up to anyone. When Rusty came in the front door, she walked right up to him, sniffed him, then rubbed against his legs. I said "What did you do?! You broke the cat!" XD lol! She really loved Rusty, and never did that with anyone else on a first meeting before or after. Cats love him and she was definitely no exception. She was the first family member in the house to meet him and she gave her approval, lol.
Puca's deafness also made her meows sound a little strange. She would also cry very VERY loudly if she thought she was alone (even if we were in the next room), and she sounded so awful sometimes the neighbors may have thought we were torturing her, lol, but I think it was because she could just barely hear herself at that volume. XD Over time she sounded a little more like a normal cat, and became very sensitive to vibrations, so it was hard to tell if she was actually still deaf. At least we never had to worry about her being woken up or being afraid of loud noises. No vacuum or thunder or anything could ever upset her. I remember once I was drawing her while she was sleeping, and I kept being afraid something was going to wake her up before I was finished with the sketch. So many noisey things happened that she slept through peacefully, then I think what finally woke her up was when I scooted my chair over a tiny bit and she felt the vibration move through the floor and up the chair she was sleeping on.
She was also a very floppy cat. We sometimes wondered if she had any ragdoll in her. She was always so chill, you could do anything with her really. I ended up teaching her (encouraging the behavior) that if she wanted me to put her down after being held, she had to do it "Matrix" style. She would stretch out to her full length, upside-down in my arms, and I would let her do this slow-motion backflip thing and she would melt to the ground. X3 I could also do "kitty curls" with her and all sorts of things like that, as well as balancing objects on her. She'd just purr and be happy for the attention.
Those are just some of the things that made Puca awesome. She was a very good kitty. She will be missed.
TL;DR: Let me tell you the cat of my people, a cat I had for half my life.
