New reference for a slightly redesigned Skittles. Less symmetry, more symbolism, more of a pain in the ass.
Alternate names:
Vichay Chromus (used within the shifter community and their sympathizers)
Vichay Dyemaker's-Son (used with the anti-shifter society he grew up with)
Vichay of the Far-Roaming Paws (used with members of his mother's species)
Important backstory bits
Vichay comes from a society where shapeshifters are widely shunned and persecuted; this attitude is largely born out of fear that a shifter might come in and e.g. replace a loved one. As such, they've also developed a sophisticated means of safeguarding against this perceived threat. The colored "markings" shown are magical tattoos, that serve the dual purpose of very visibly marking their bearer as a shifter (so they can be avoided) and severely limiting their shifting abilities. Vichay received his as a child, which (understandably) was a traumatic experience for him, though in adulthood he usually wears a happy, almost carefree face - in fact, wearing a consistent pattern of black and white between shapes is something of a middle finger to the people who decided he needed to be permanently marked (most shifters will do what they can to cover their tattoos up, mostly through clothing, as make-up and similar tends to get "worn through" pretty swiftly by the magic).
While the exact enchantments and designs woven into the tattoos vary from case to case and according to local custom, the set of colors doesn't tend to vary (some few areas will only use the primary colors, but that's relatively rare), as each colored tattoo will act as a "constraint" for that particular color, making the bearer unable to take on that color elsewhere on their body. Taking advantage of this magic, it is possible for a bearer to alter the exact shade of a given tattoo, though it will always remain recognizably <color>.
The numbers three and six have some specific power in the school of magic used, so it's not a coincidence that there are six tattoos, with six colors, and six enchantments, nor that many of the designs have three or six "points" in some way. The ink, magic, and colors also work to reinforce one another, making these tattoos (or their enchantments) virtually impossible to remove/break. As they are magical tattoos, the designs will come out fairly crisp even in long fur or feathers.
The specific enchantments woven into Vichay's tattoos (aside from the color constraints) are as follows:
Red: Size limitation - prevents him from growing beyond a certain size. This is not a hard limit, but once the constraints kick in it's going to be more difficult for him to maintain a shape the larger he gets, down to being potentially life threatening if he pushes it too far. (In absolute terms, it prevents him from growing his heart beyond its natural size through shapeshifting - because he does still take shapes on the large end of what he can manage his heart's gotten enlarged over time (cardiomegaly) to compensate and he instinctively shifts it to the closest he can get to a natural size for his current body.)
Blue: Size limitation - prevents him from shrinking beyond a certain size. Again, this is not a hard limit, but pushing it could do him a serious harm. (Absolute terms, he's prevented from significantly shrinking his lungs - symptoms of forcing it would basically mimic tension pneumothorax.)
Yellow: Form limitation - prevents him from exactly duplicating an individual's appearance (even outside of color) by slightly distorting the way his brain registers visual stimuli, effectively disrupting his eye-shift coordination.
Green: Magic nullification - any magical incantation spoken will be rendered powerless. As such, he is unable to learn any magic requiring a verbal component, even should it not otherwise require a magical gift.
Purple: Magic nullification - inherent magical or supernatural properties of forms he takes will be negated or severely reduced. If he takes the shape of a fire-breathing dragon he will not be able to breathe fire, and if he takes the shape of a unicorn, his horn will at best have limited restorative/purifying properties.
Orange: Sterility - does what it says on the tin. Since his society fears shapeshifters, this is a standard enchantment virtually always included in some form regardless of what other enchantments are placed, in order to attempt to limit their spread.
Abilities he does have
The drawback of marking a shapeshifter in childhood is, of course, that you have less room to tailor your choice of enchantments for the individual shifter, meaning all shifter children from a given area often get the same or nearly the same set of "standard" enchantments. Sometimes, this results in some significant omissions:
- Up until he was marked, Vichay primarily used his shapeshifting abilities to imitate other children, in an attempt to get affection from their parents, since he himself wasn't getting much of any, hence the choice of enchantment for his yellow tattoo. At the time, nobody realized that he's fully capable of picking and choosing bits and pieces of creatures he's seen to assemble a chimera of features that don't actually exist together in any one animal. While he has to have seen a creature with those features in the flesh or in a detailed drawing (think anatomical illustrations), under the limitations of his shapeshifting ability, the combining isn't hampered at all by his Marks.
- Vichay's shapeshifting is actually contagious. Contact between his sexual fluids and another individual's mucus membranes will temporarily turn that individual into a shifter, with all the abilities Vichay would have if not for his tattoos, and none of the limitations, though also lacking his instinctive control of his abilities. Usually, this results in any partner of his shifting uncontrollably into the first thing that comes to mind (and then the next, and the next...) until the effect wears off. Experienced mages or others with lots of practice schooling their minds would be better off, but still would have to guard their stray thoughts.
- Vichay can shift sex at will, though he doesn't really have a strong concept of physical form correlating to gender (his physical form changes all the time, after all!), so he will still identify as male regardless of form.
