Here it is, described in my last journal. A 1980 VW rabbit convertible. Apperently it was supposed to be in some kind of running condition, but when we got there, it wasnt at all. The breaks aren't working cause of a leak on the break reservor. There is no ignition caliber *seems to be the thing you put your key in, no keys either for the doors or the ignition* Besides being loved too much on the outside, the interior is pretty far gone as well. The seats need to be redone, maybe replaced, not sure. The top seems like it needs to be rebuilt as well. No idea on the engine, until I have some way to turn it over. Doors also need to be redone and dash replaces. Pretty much I need to start from scratch on this, but that was the plan in the first place. One day I do plan to have it completely rebuilt.
So far all I have into it, is 800$ for the car itself and 40$ for the tow dolley to pull it 250 miles from dallas. Next step seems to get a car cover *a window doesnt roll up all the way* seat covers *metal bars on the seats are sticking out* and ramps *so I can get under it to do anything* I'm very new at working on cars, so this will be interesting!

its a disgusting sty of a car now.. the seats are smished down so badly that you need to put padding in so you don't feel the frame on your bum. It is disturbing that my fat-assed father can fit in it. If we go anywhere as a family in ONE vehicle, I make them go in MY van or I just won't go at all.
=^.,.^=

Not for me ^.^ the paint will look about to the same color it is now and the roof will be white. I might get some new rims, but they will be VW rims, about the same size. The interior will be totally redone, and I think it will be cheaper just to do it kinda custom then trying to make it indentical to orgional specs.
if you don't have THIS book, get it immediately.
http://www.amazon.com/How-keep-your...../dp/0912528176
gather all the tools and components it says to get, and keep them handy.
I have a version for my Beetle, and it helps immensely.
go to your local bookstore and order it, buy it, go to the library and borrow it, but just get ahold of it and read it.
it's THAT good on the subject.

I shall get that, I was looking to get that bently manual, *at the bottom of the page* cause every forum ever says thats what to get. I found a hayes manual but people say its subpar, but its something. I might need an owners manual, cause I thought the parking brake was busted, only to find out you need to lift up and push the button to engage as well as disengage -.- this will be a long haul :D
Well, you definately got a lot of work to do on that thing. Hopefully you'll be able to find the interior stuff with no problem. Though I must admit, the outside don't look too bad, straight looking. And it's got nice rims.
Have you guys found the ignition switch for it? Cause if it's like anything I have seen, it's either in the steering column, near where the ignition lock should be. Or it's bolted onto the steering column deeper, underneath the dash. Either way, once you find the switch, you can turn it one and start it, by passing the ignition lock. Just finding it is the fun part. That, and looking for it would help you find out of the last person had been doing nothing but hot wiring it. Though now I think about it, there should be something like a rod in the hole where the ignition lock should be. If you can reach that, then it's a matter of figuring out how to mess with it.

The switch is in the lock but the wires are behind it, so I think I could start it that way, but knowing little about cars, Id rather not, and I would like a key. This weekend I'm going to look around atta pick a part places and there is a "bug clinic" here and see if there is any local source for parts. Also I need to figure out what excatly what my car is. I know its a rabbit, and it appears to be a convertible, but it seems there were several styles in that as well. Also the golf and jetta something with an S is shoved in the same catagory, so I dont know what parts are interchangeable. I have the vin #, I wonder if there is something I can do with that.
Running when on a downward slope of a hill !! ;D
Anyway, it's quite a nice experience if you are in the mood to fix it, a "level-up" model quite somehow ! ^^
Hope you'll be able to make something great of it, and anyway, looks like you're happy with it, so I'm happy for you :3 :3

Um... well, it's a classic, alright. DeLorean. ;)
No, I expect to have to order one from DMC in Houston. Even in their stock of vehicles they buy and sell, there's only 3 Stickshifts right now, and two of those are in the Netherlands... the third in Florida. And they want enough money for it it would be a better deal to have them BUILD me one... *sigh* Time to start saving up for it.

"Scam Car". If you mean the drug thing, that was SERIOUS entrapment by the FBI. They came to DeLorean (who's company was undercapitalized and in trouble) through a former drug runner now working for the FBI. They offered him a part in a money-laundering operation. He left notes with his lawyers prior to the final meet stating he was going along out of fear for his family.
During the ARREST, the FBI threatened his family. the tapes on that were made public, and delayed the trial for over a year. While he was unable to run the company or raise capital, it went out of business.
As far as the engineering. it's a FANTASTIC design. the two major flaws were both dropped on it at the last minute by the US government:
1> Catalytic Converter. Dropped the engine's HP output from 170 to 130, making it underpowered. (2700 lbs) As the current MX-5 (Miata) Is nigh unto 2500 lbs and 177 HP, and the quickest thing off the mark I've ever driven. the DESIGNED specs for the DeLorean would have been adequate.
2> Handling. US Government introduced (or threatened to... I keep finding conflicting sources on this) bumper height restrictions as the DeLorean was entering final production, forcing a quick change to much stiffer and higher springs and shocks. This had a serious negative impact on handling, and the first custom change most DeLorean buyers made or make now is to lower the car back.
3> Crazy Expensive. ...Okay, hard to argue that one. they're not "Mercedes expensive", but they are pricey. There's about 6,500 believed to still be in existence (just over 9k ever built). but there's a HELL of a lot of parts for them. the factory was supposed to be capable of making 30k of them a year, and they produced for 2-3 years. The original body dies are GONE, but there's a warehouse of parts in the Houston area. 6 Dealerships worldwide that still maintain and refurbish... the place in Houston, as of 2 years ago, will HAND BUILD a new one out of parts. But the base price is 57,500. So I can't argue the "expensive" part of this.

The car being though of might be the Bricklin SV-1, the other car with gull-wing doors, which did have a whole lot of technical issues.
Which is too bad, because it's a nice looking car that is apparently very nice if you've had the problems fixed[1].
[1] They're almost all small, the biggest one being that a full modern fix replaces the acrylic body panels because better, and lighter, materials are available now.

Don't listen to the nay-sayers; I see a LOT of potential in this car!
I've been a VW nut for YEARS... dream project car is either a 16V Scirocco (don't care which year), or a Corrado VR6. Love them. :) I briefly had an '86 16V Scirocco, and my husband and I both have regretted selling it.

Well doing research it looks like this one is a Scirocco o.o but not the v16 for sure, I would guess it is the stock 1.6 that came with it. I will one day put the heads and take a look to see how good, or bad it is up in there. Not one for wanting to sup it out but it the engine does end up being shot, I could possiblly toss a 16v in there :D
Having no brakes is a fun time!
Not an issue for me. Just go about 15 or 20 MPH with hazards on, and when you see a stop coming up, take your foot off of the gas and utilize the handbrake to control speed.
Because paying astronomical amounts to tow your car (which costs twice as much as a brake job) is just plain crazy in my opinion.

Well I had no breaks.. that means none. Hand breaks are brakes :P Since then I have replaces the whole back brakes, so I have emergercy breaks, but still no fluid in the lines and no cap for the top the the resavor is off of the breaks and the front ones are still shot. I havent seen my car for over 5 months cause its been in a shop that long and they still have yet to look at it.
Well, you don't need a special repair shop just to do a brake job. Any repair shop (reputable ones) can fix any kind of car, you shouldn't have to need a special VW repair shop. Even then it should have only taken 5 days. I don't mean to call you stupid, but thinking it takes 5 months to fix a car? That is just stupid. They are probably screwing you over....
If your car still looks the same as it does in this picture, I'd be surprised. Because after months and months of sitting in their parking lot or wherever it is, it probably looks a lot like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/18175464@N00/3814265408/
Good luck! Hope you get it back in one piece!

Oh its not the breaks, not at all. I can do tthe breaks myself, I did the rear ones. The problem is nothing works on the car. Some one ripped all of the wires out of everything. It had no key or key lock, which I replaced. 3/4 of the fuses were blown which I replaced, had no door key which I replaced. I replaces the rear taillight assembley and the side marker lights and then looked in the engine and the coils and the starter were there with all of the wires ripped out. I got a new battery and hooked up the starter and got the engine to move. I tried to hook up the coils but there was a cut wire, and more wires then I were supposed to hook up to the coils. Then I wasnt getting spark, I tested the plugs and I'm not getting fuel, but I cant find the fuel pump fuse cause the whole module isnt where the manual says it supposed to be. I also dont know if the engine is holding pressure or anything. I think the transmission might be busted, but I really dont know on that.
The only thing they were supposed to do was pretty much check it over and tell me what was busted and thats it, maybe give me an estimate on what it would cost to fix certain parts, cause I was going to do alot of it myself, but I dont have the money to buy parts that I'm not sure are broken. So far they havent even got that far.

Well, to tell you the truth...at this juncture, I'd just say "fuck it" and look for another VW Rabbit that actually runs. You'd probably be paying more for parts and repairs than what you originally paid for the car to begin with. Cars a like a can of worms most of the time. I'd say to keep this one as a partsmobile for your new Rabbit.
Well it was supposed to be a project car for the act of repairing it then just having a car, cause I already have a truck that works fine. I've learned alot, but since the car is so off from the manual right nwo I just need more help telling me whats wrong so I know what to replace/fix. I've only got about 1100 into it, 800 for the car itself. I havent paid the repair people anything. A running one in good condition appears to cost about 7-10k$
