That's what school was like for me. The nerds were victim-shamed for being beaten up by the jocks.
After all, they couldn't suspend the actual bullies...
...if they suspended the jocks, they might lose the next football game.
---
And people were shocked when Columbine happened. They were just the first pair of nerds to snap and 'solve the bully problem on their own, since none of the people who were supposed to help them gave a rat's ass.'

Similar story here, learned later how savage school was when I finally snapped at a bully after 10 years of harassment. Suddenly they started saying "hi" to me when I used to be ignored. They respected fear of violence, especially from one who was previously known to be quiet.
I was lucky in that I "only" had to throw some dumb shrimp's ass 20 feet down the hallway. That got me suspended, but it was so worth it because nobody ever picked on me again.
Children are a window into the minds of cavemen. They quickly learn to form tribes and respect thugs... kinda like living in the slums.

I had a similar experience. I was rather *ahem* "fluffy" nerd type so the jocks figured I was a soft target.
Fluffy however can also describe a Sumo wrestler. One day in Grade 9 I snapped and picked up an iron-maiden style desk (the one with the attached chair) and tossed it 30 feet across the room at one jerk, missing by inches. Everyone kept quiet about it when the teacher came in but after that no one would push their luck with me except for one jerk, a grade 9 while I was a senior. First time he used a baseball bat, wanging me in the elbow but in front of the vice principal who grabbed him by the scruff and hauled him up to the Dungeon, expelling him for two weeks.
When the jerk confronted me with two buddies in front of the school three weeks later, I buried his sorry ass in a five foot snowdrift while his posse just looked on and then started to raz him. The vice principal was waiting outside for me as I passed his office, noting that he saw the whole thing and confirmed he saw Peanut-For-Brains throw the first punch and that I used restraint in that I only picked him and tossed him into the bank as opposed all sorts physical hurt that I could have inflicted...
I never had any more trouble from Peanut or his buddies after that.

Columbine shootings are only the "modern era" stuff. Since apparently school bullying and fights of any kind didn't exist in the past. Nor religious schism of the churches, skin colour prejudice, hair colour coding, food/clothes ridicule, fairy tales about a habit, slander, physical deformation like strabismus and missing/extra finger, left-handed satanism, nationality hating, and clique'. Since caning, the strap, beating some sense into him, flogging, and the switch never existed, you can always trust adults! They also like to ignore that people can only be pushed so far.
Exactly, and trophies lead to athletic scholarships.
Or to use the phrase from In Living Color: "Mo' money, mo' money, mo' money!"
Bottom line, smart kids aren't profitable for the schools, and they burn through resources from the teachers trying to keep up with their learning needs. Jocks allow the teachers to relax and run the lesson plans at 60-80% normal speed.

I thought they where just genraly stupid. and that if you got picked on you deserved it. and that was NEVER true from 6 to 17 when I snapped and used a chair on a class mate that was bugging me yet AGAIN!!! when It stopped at 17 I had pouf that I was abused marks on my back and jeans from Bic lighters
Also take into consideration that most of the big troublemakers in High School were involved in athletic programs, or had parents who were financially supporting the schools. I had a couple instances where I was accosted and the Teachers who witnessed the incident would shrug and say things like "Boys will be boys."
I found the teachers had a bit more sympathy towards me when I was bullied, in the UK the whole jocks vs nerds thing isn't so prominent because our schools don't rely heavily on football etc. to get more funding and what not.
No, I found this conversation usually happened between my parents and I. whenever I came home with a black-eye or was sad or crying because I was beat up or humiliated, my parents would always say "well, it must be something YOU'RE doing to make them hurt you". I went through all of secondary school and college thinking that I was the problem, whenever anyone felt like throwing abuse at me, it must have been something I had done. Even when I tried to avoid confrontation at all costs, it still happened, and again, my parents would convince me it was my fault.
