Color Experiment (Need critique)
<<< PREV | FIRST | NEXT >>>
I know I said I was done with this pic but I couldn't find the line art from that other thing and I was more excited about trying out the new color method than about drawing something new :P
New color method suggested by
fossil and
pinkuh is some kind of additive thing that I've never done before. So this is how it turned out plus an overlay layer of white because it turned out very very dark.
EDIT-1: Okay changed up the background since the other one was a little dark. Just a gradient.
EDIT-2: Alrighty, put a soft white layer on it to try to brighten it up a bit.
That said I wanted critique on the coloring and such since this is kind of a whole new method for me. Want to find out whats working and whats not working. Anyone who just says "This is awesome" will be shot!
EDIT: Pulled out of scraps for the hell of it :P

Hehe, yeah the background might still be a little dark, need to remember that and I might reupload it with a brighter background. I do most of my art on my laptop which has a really bright screen and I just looked at this on my CRT monitor and yeah it's still a little dark.

Well the first thing that jumps out at me is Drake's legs. the way you have them shaded they look like his legs are springs.
As for the background my suggestion would be to try a bright outline around Drake and Vasha, an on the outside portion of the outline blur it into a darker background. This way the viewer's eyes are able to see the differences better with out being drawn away from Drake and Vasha.
Now for Vasha's shading over all I like it (even though it is a bit too dark) her bathing suit though has a little too much contrast either the highlight needs to be brought back a little or the shadows need to be brightened. Over all I like how it turned out for a new method.
*takes his critic hat off*
As a side note I've been experimenting with a technique that I've seen
pinkuh use in her ustream accounts. Mostly it's been me taking what I've seen her do (namely the gradient mapping) and adapt it to my style.
Again I have to say, although Vasha turned out too dark (which can be blamed on the laptop, I know too well the headache with that) she still turned out pretty nice.

Hahaa... Springs! Yeah I need to study cloth folds... badly :P Lizardbeth suggested a really good book for that... forgot the title though. Oh well not important, broke anyway, I'll look up cloth on the interbutts!
Bright outline? I dont do that much, although for a close in with a gradient BG I may as well start doing that. One thing I wanted to try, and might re-upload it here if it looks good, is that thing some people do where they recolor the line itself to accent the colors. What do you think?
Yeah bathing suit did come up a little contrasty, a little late to fix it without a complete redo. Maybe I can make it look like that sparkly fabric that does that.

Hehe yeah even with a brighter BG it's still dark o my CRT. I had even put a full white overlay on it and thats what it did. I imagine if I uploaded the original and looked at it on my CRT it would just be black with 2 sets of eyes hovering in the air.

Your not alone on the cloth fold study, I need to do it sometime. I remember one of my art teachers telling me "remember the form that is under the fabric when drawing".
I've toyed around with the colored line style myself, could never pull it off, (or at least to a level I liked anyway.) but you mite get it to work for you so try it you never know.

I know what you mean. When I did this piece, I had posed the models and done the lighting on my laptop but when I transferred it to my desktop it was near black. so I had to salvage what I could through photoshop.

The background makes it look as though the lighting is in the wrong place.
While you have the shading on the female that looks really good, the brightness of the pink behind her makes the shading look awkward.
A bit more shading on her face/head would make it look right, or you could change the direction of the gradient.
