This is my usual thing to do. Right now I'm starting a bit of a self-goal to create 4 models by Sunday, and this is model number 1. All of this is intended to be done for Unreal Tournament 2004's mod Ballistic Weapons. Since UT2k4 uses a bit of an old engine, Unreal Engine 2.5, the model isn't the best I could necessarily make, but it's as good as needed for it to look decent in game.
Hard to reach goals are fun!
To note: I know I left off the trigger, this was done simply because I simply was an idiot and took a screenshot a bit too fast. I might upload a new version of the pic that has the trigger actually in place.

Actual Weapon Name: Heckler & Koch HK417 w/20" Sniper Barrel
BWified Name: Kevin & Emerson KE416-5
BW Description: A formidable battle rifle, the KE416-5 was used by many designated marksman soldiers in the Second Human-Skrith War. Firing the venerable 7.62x51mm NATO round, the KE416-5 has the power to incapacitate an opponent within a minimal number of shots. This particular weapon has a 20 round magazine and a 4x scope.

Usually if it's an entirely custom weapon, I start out with a simple side-view concept in a notebook, then make the model from that. As for one that is in-game, it's a custom pistol I designed, called the SF-27 T.A.P.
A lot of the stuff I've made is available for viewing on a site called BWCommunity.com (note: It's a community specifically about modding the BW mod for UT2k4. Confusing, huh?)

Thanks! As for the smoothing groups, they don't exactly make much for a difference once the weapon gets UV mapped, animated, and put into the game. I had a few problems with smoothing groups on the SF-27, but I ignored them and put that in-game and it really didn't show as any sort of problem (that or it somehow fixed the problems). The biggest problem on that thing wasn't even related to the weapon model, but rather the stupid exporter to UE2.5!
Well unfortunately, I pretty much just was going to get around to recreating this model, but I'm unable to export the model to Maya 2010 due to the original model being created using a PLE version of Maya. It's highly annoying, so I'm not even gonna try making a crappy workaround (export to UEd3, export that to obj format, import into Maya 2010, work on an updated model using orig as reference). However, I might sometime during the summer try working on just another model of some weapon and see how that turns out and possibly upload here for your viewing pleasure.
