I've found that most cars from the 70's (that I've seen) are ugly little things, this is singificantly less ugly.
That aside, you did a great job, the car feels like it's about to drive out of my monitor and into my apartment it looks so real.

It sort of looks like the old 1970 Ford Cortina. Definately a good base to design from!

А так как бы про между строк ЕДИНСТВЕННАЯ машина, которую наши придумали, разработали и выпустили как они говорят "From scratch" Был Москвич 408 (перешедший позже в 412) Вот ни одной детальки от ихнего, всё наше от и до.

Всё остальное - слизанно, уворовано и "сделано по лицензии"

How popular was this model?

There wasn't much car makers USSR and this Volga was made during 15 years... Kinda popular model, for the "middle class". But the most popular cars were the Lada (VAZ) (and it's still true now).

Some were exported in Western Europe... In Germany and Belgium, some were sold with Rover then Indenor Diesel engines... I will like to find one of these
