Football Cubs special - Leicester and the Ghost King!
Here's the big grand finale picture of Football Cubs that I never got round to last year - the exciting story of how Leicester City won the Premier League title against all expectation!
It's a well-known story by now - when the remains of King Richard III were re-buried in Leicester Cathedral, the fortunes of Leicester's football team took an immediate and dramatic upswing, ending with them winning the league for the first time in their history!
We're now half-way through the next season, and the magic seems to have worn off. Leicester are struggling this year, down in the bottom half of the Premier League table. But the Football Cubs have got together to perform a play, showing the world the true story behind Leicester's title win!
Richard was killed by his distant cousin Henry in 1485 (the royal family were always killing each other in the 1400s) and buried in a nearby friary in Leicester. Henry's son, Henry VIII, later fell out with the Catholic church in a big way and had the friary shut down and demolished. This probably upset the ghost of King Richard quite a lot.
Richard didn't really have any connection with Leicester, though - as far as I know, the only English king who did was the fictional King Lear, so I suspect Richard's reason for cursing the city was based mainly on professional jealousy. Shakespeare's play about Richard III not only made him out to be an evil, scheming, horribly deformed villain, it also wasn't as good as the one about King Lear! So it's no wonder Richard's ghost had a grudge against Leicester!
Leicester City football club was founded in 1884, at the height of popularity for the new professional football clubs springing up all over - the internet doesn't seem to know the names of the people whose idea it was, but I'm sure they wore cool bow ties. The club never quite managed to reach the top, coming second in the league in 1929, just a couple of months before the stock market crash that led to the great depression. They lost the FA Cup final four times without ever winning it, more than any other team in history.
But then, in 2011, a research project identified where Richard was probably buried, they discovered his skeleton, and it was re-buried in the cathedral. Richard forgave the city of Leicester, and helped their team win the league! Yaaaaay! ^.^

Heehee, thanks, Kaff! *happy hugs* And I'm sure Leicester will be okay, they seem to be getting back on track after a shaky start... Sunderland are doing the exact same thing this season as last - this time it took them eleven games before they won one, but now I think they're confidently aiming to finish 17th again! ^.^
