I'd like to interpret this as an allegory for life. you spend all your life trying to progress and reach a goal, But by you time you get there you realise it wasn't all as great as you expected. and then you become disillusioned and fall into deep pit of despair. or maybe you spend all you time trying to reach the pinnacle but it just keeps getting further away... then you give up and/or die full of regret.
