I'm a redhead as well.
I did dye it blue. Dark blue. Twice.
Both times I had to have it done professionally and the dye was a @&#$)(*&%@ to get to stick without distortion or fading.
Now I'm just my natural color because..... I'm too tired most of the time to have something more to upkeep. :P

Its because of the core texture of our hair.
It has naturally open follicles on each strand/shaft, (hence why we usually have curly course/dry feeling hair), which make it very difficult for them to hold color. It also means that when we strip them with bleaches and toners, the hair is more willing to die than give up its natural pigments.
