It is a marked departure from your normally sharp, smooth colors, and the lines are a bit more angular then I know you to be... if I had to pick it out of a line up of your art, I probably couldn't.

The Goombas were traitors who went to work for Bowser. The shyguys were originally employed by Wart. I don't remember the first game in which Bowser had any employed.

Shyguys are like Spartans, it's part of their culture.

Supposedly it's due to their extreme shyness. Although since they don't approach you (at least in Mario 2) when you look at them directly. So it makes me wonder what the use is.

The shyguys will charge at you, it's the BooBuddies that hold still.

At least I think I remember the shyguys pretty well...

Also, I'm diggin' the way u used the medium for this one. What is that exactly, pastels? Color pencil?

Somehow the pose is making me think a lot of the Hunter from Zeno Clash.

I believe their are Japanese mythological characters, some kind of "Faceless men" who either wander into a house and cause trouble, or are the generic minions for a bad guy. (Either that or they are the generic type of bad guy who is really just a floating mask with a robe around it; there's nothing under the mask and robes.)

I don't know for sure though, so don't quote me on this.

The deviation from your usual style is pretty impressive, it shows a lot of artistic versatility. The piece itself is nicely done, and you also earned one epic point for your choice and interpretation of character. It would have been two epic points if he were on stilts.

I always imagined that they were trying to help you in the games they appeared in, like they were trying to warn you about some threat around the next corner, or show you a short cut to the next safe place. Then you murder them. Then laughter.

Somehow, Shy Guys just became the greatest Mario enemies ever.

Mario 2? THe one where you could play as Toad and Peach, and the entire game was really originally about some arabian family and they just changed all of the pixels to turn it into a Mario game so that western audiences would eat it right up?

At least, I think there were shy guys in that. Err, at any rate... that game's characters in order of awesomeness: Peach, Toad, Luigi, Mario.

I thought that a comic about this new envisioning of the Mushroom Kingdom would be cool, since you enjoy writing, drawing, and realistic views on originally goofy stuff (i.e. this picture).
