Spork Skull "For a spider that likes to eat".
I recently bought and enjoyed Monster Masume, "Everyday Life with Monster Girls". I'd been aware of the single sheets that were floating around, and that there was some sort of Manga. I didn't realize how much.
My thoughts on the manga in quick bullet form:
- I absolutely hate Harem stories
- I also absolutely hate the generic Everyman Waffleman Milqutoast Otaku stuck in those stories as the closest thing to a blank slate that I'm supposed to relate to. Sometimes I think a silent 'YCH' Anony-Ghost outline would inspire a greater connection.
- I bought 2 books because I was interested in the character designs, and figured that would give me plenty to look at.
- I bought the rest up to 9, because I'd gotten interested in the girls.
So, I guess I got drawn a little into their conflict. What made the series somewhat forgivable was the sense that the artist was drawing it for the same reason i wanted to look at it. Namely, a bunch of monsters in a variety of poses and normal situations. The lame excuse for a plot seems the least he needed to string them all together and answer all the questions.
Two Monster girls fighting. Why? Over the guy
Two Monster girls go shopping. Why? Guy goes shopping
Monster girl in a fight. Why? Guy happened to be there
etc.
He's essentially a male human McGuffin, something important to hinge the plot on, not important in any way.
Anyhow, in Book 4 Arachnae shows up, and she's a sexy drider with a stylized skull on her abdomen. I'd been seeing it around in a few places, and didn't realize it came from this. While that makes me a little more okay with copying the design, I still felt I should come up with some other, kind of splotchy, kind of natural, skull marking.

Yeah, I'm not a big fan of harem stuff either, really. Sometimes the plot makes sense enough for me to like it, but not usually. It never made sense to me how the guy can get together with all these girls, each one having a completely different personality, and not only would they be okay with him going off with other girls while he's with them; but they'd be totally okay with him bringing them all home to live with him in one house. And they never get into a fight. Ever. Because that's totally natural and stuff. :/
I tried to get into 'Everyday Life' because it looked interesting (guy gets forced to live with all these monster girls), and I have to admit I think it'd be kinda hot to have a cute monster girl in love with me, but the guy just wasn't interesting at all. Here he has all these cute monster girls wanting to be with him; yet he acts like it's the worst thing ever when one of the girls gets all touchy-feely. And yet, in the same season, he gets into situations where he has to get touchy-feely with them (like helping the naga shed her skin) and he's okay with it.
I kinda like the comedy of it in small doses, but not in every single episode and only if it adds something to the plot or makes sense. Same reason I don't like A Certain Magical Index (I have never seen the sequel, A Certain Scientific Railgun, so I don't know if that's better). The 'comedy' in that didn't make sense whatsoever, with Index constantly biting him for absolutely no reason, and it often came out of nowhere and added nothing to the plot. And just as quickly it would get serious again. Like, they'd have a scene where she was biting him and it would be all "You need to laugh here because this is funny", and yet immediately after that they'd be all serious like nothing ever happened. Then they'd be serious for a while and suddenly "RANDOM COMEDY IS RANDOM".
I watch a lot of anime, and thankfully that doesn't happen in every series, but when it does happen it ruins what could otherwise be a very interesting series for me. The premise to 'Index' was actually quite interesting, which is why I started watching it in the first place, but the random nonsensical comedy ruined it (I actually managed to make it through the entire first season, somehow, simply because I'm stubborn and wanted to see how it played out).
Anyway, I'm rambling. ^^

Personally, if we're going for harem-type anime, I like Aesthetica of a Rogue Hero much better. At least in that one the main protagonist can kick ass, instead of being this little nerdy guy who acts like he's afraid to even get near a woman. Either that series or Testament of Sister New Devil. But that's just my opinion. x3
