Here's a little look into my process. After a reference photo session (that I didn't end up using) and several attempts to set up the scene, I finally came up with a satisfying solution for this illustration. This is as far as I go with grayscale and the next step would be placing general colors and over-painting everything to get the look and the details that I want. And I think I finally starting to become comfortable with character art that was and still is my biggest weakness.
Oh and, does that look like a dog? I've been getting a lot of "hey, cool bear"s.

Dog. It is totally a dog. LOOK I SAW A DAWG!!! lol XD
Paws are dog. Ears are dog. Head is dog. Muzzle is dog. And I don't think bears like to chew on bones. :3 so definitely a dawg
The character isn't bad at all. Though a lot of your art somehow (to my point of view) are lacking in accentuation somehow. It's mostly on the character. And I can't point my finger on it. But somehow that's the case... Either the lack of the character's brightness over everything else or the blur of the limited image quality. I don't really know. But maybe an added brighter feel to the character that brings them almost a 3D like effect as if they are at the forefront of an immage and not feel like their blending with the background? Maybe? I honestly don't know... My mind is conflicted by the possibilities... But this is just an honest assessment and advice that may or may not help at all.
