I know I said I wouldn't, but I ended up deciding to post an up to date peak at this picture I've been working on. I wanted to create a gallery to keep track of how I chunk and approach a large scale picture. The thing that really clinched it was feeling that it was far enough along progress-wise from the last pic to justify it.

I think I'll post another when the background is completed, and then 1 or two more for the character, depending on my progress. Hopefully that doesn't annoy any of you ;_;.

EDIT: Forgot to mention my fav part of this so far.

I spent some time studying up on how light works in water and wanted to try making some caustic networks (the little squiggly yellow/orange highlights under the water surface). It might sound weird, but it was very satisfying trying to imagine how wave shape, medium clarity/density, light intensity and simple refraction all came together (as far as my understanding allows). My success is debatable, but the experience is really stretching me and I want to do more in the future. Who knows what might happen?
