Attempting to find an inking style that works for me. After trying numerous things I think I'll be settling on this one. It's not a single width line like I used for awhile to some effect, and it doesn't employ those Noir-esque spot blacks I've been using as of late. It's something in between, there is line weight but only some. The spot blacks I was using look great in comics, high contrast work, or when cell shaded (See Sean Gordon Murphy ). The thin lines work, but more for someone with better rendering skills (see: JayAxer ) . I think I've found a happy medium, almost closer to an Adam Hughes look, but still something I can call my own. I think the spot blacks were at their best here: [link] but weren't working in my other illustrations as well. In truth I'll probably adopt both styles and employ them as I see fit. I like to think I can ink and color in a variety of ways, and I hope that versatility pays off.
Oh by the way, I did this image because I've been missing my main-gal Sei for a bit. She needed some love.

What I figured out: don't try and do the lines slowly. Get a brush you like and try to make the lines very quickly (on a layer over the pencils of course), erasing the parts that overshoot the mark, or "ctrl+z"ing and redrawing it until it looks how you want it. Frustrating at first, especially when trying to do longer curves that go against your hands natural curve, but ultimately it's a skill that will make you much faster than people who rely on the pen or bezier tools.
