While I would like to work on my game only when I'm in the mood, I think the game will take to long make if I do that. Likewise, even if the ideas aren't perfect, I'll need something to work with sooner or later. So crack that whip, and get working. I was also inspired by Robert Rodriguez talking about modern music software allowing him to compose at the speed of thought. By the time he's thought of what he wants to do, he's done it.
I wanted some simple NPC concepts. Simple in the sense that they'll be easy to model, or at least, easier than the main stuff I want to do later when I actually have some skill. These are what I've come up with.
-Robot Man (top half)
I want robotic enemies in the game. Ideally I'd like to be able to blow bits off them like in Binary Domain, where if you blow their legs off, they'll crawl at you terminator style, or blow off the arms to reduce their accuracy, etc. Yet I didn't want lots of exposed hydraulics and the like. Mainly because I don't want to model them, but also because I'm going for a late 90s FPS look here. It also has to conform to a human skeleton, as I don't want to have separate rigs, at least not yet.
I had various ideas for the head. Mostly involving cameras. But also a CRT TV/monitor simply because it would look cool. Most of the machine is made up of blocks, so it should be easy enough. While drawing, I had the idea for having the texture reflect a PC, with vents in the back, perhaps even a kettle plug shapped charging port on it's back, or on the back of the head. I extended this idea to perhaps having them be beige boxes inspired by 90s PCs. As I type this, I just had the idea of having a shutdown jiggle play as they die, or a knock off windows boot noise or Intel jingle play when they spot you. Floppy/hard disk noises when thinking, etc.
-Wetsuit Soldier (bottom left)
For a more organic enemy, I had the idea of a soldier character in a wetsuit. In a sense, I can model the character "naked", with the wetsuit being a texture. I think the inclusion of goggles would be cool. Plus it might help hide the face, though really that's not a big deal.
-VR Trooper (bottom right)
I thought of a tron esc VR stage, mainly because tron esc VR graphics are easy to do. It's just a glowing square that you tile throughout the level. Again, having them wear a VR headset, life a VIVE, Rift, PSVR, or even something like from Red Dwarf Gunmen of the Apocalypse. Though I doubt I'd go so far as to build custom stages like that.
