The elder brother of Zeus had the full mastery of the seas and oceans of benevolent character, but if they ignored him or rejected him, Poseidon is capable of unleashing all his divine fury by punishing the surface with all the power of the ocean.

The travelers before beginning their journey through the seas prayed and begged the god of the seas to make their journey safe, and not provoke their wrath.
