One for the fellow ferroequinologists out there...
This is a recently refurbished New Zealand Rail "EO" Class electric locomotive standing at Wellington Railway station, with a Metlink "SE" class (ex-British Rail Mk2) carriage at the rear. The "EO" class were originally used to take trains through the 8 km long Otira Tunnel under the Southern Alps on the Midland line, but after over ten years of languishing in retirement three have been transferred to the Wellington Metro area to pull peak-hour commuter trains on the Hutt Valley and Paraparaumu lines.
Class: EO (1968) (formerly EA)
Wheel Arrangement: Bo-Bo
Manufacturer: Toshiba (1968)
Power output: 960kW
Electric Current: 1500V DC
Built: 5
In Service: 3 (2 regular, 1 spare)
Operator: New Zealand Railways /KiwiRail
(Yes, I can bore for my country with the best of them )

Not in NA any more, but it does bear a bit of a resemblance to the electrics that used to run commuter services in Montreal:

o.o thats certainly an odd looker. xD the designs some people can come up for diesel locomotives are amazing and typically entertaining. This one i first though it had a nose in the front with 3 windows two at the side angled with one flat in the front /-\ sorta like that from the thumbnail xD but this ones got none at all.
Not really. Only Auckland and Wellington have any form of commuter rail service (Wellington being the most extensive), and there's only a handful of long-haul passenger trains. It's faster to drive from Wellington to Auckland than take the train... New Zealand rail is mostly used for freight.
The problem stems from trying to build a rail system for a country the area of the UK, with the terrain of Scotland, for the combined population of Liverpool and Manchester. Or, for Americans, Oregon having to build its own railway system with no Federal assistance.

Good analogy, Mayfurr, I understand completely now.
The U.S. sort of did this in reverse. At one time, trains were our main method of frieght and fairly competitive as a means of personal transportation. Over the decades, the advent of the auto and the long haul trucker has destroyed this once proud industry. I live in a community that once hosted coal trains on a regular basis. Now, the only train on the tracks is a tourist passenger train and even it's not always full. It's sad....

Toshiba built eh? I was quite sure just for the locomotive's aspect that it was something from Japan! Built by Hitachi, a different model of locomotive, but not too different, kinda reasembles to that one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JNR_Class_EF57
