I'd say people draw from profile a lot because it's a great way to get familiar with a new character without getting overwhelmed by the 3D construction, and it allows you to explore other artistic techniques.
Drawing from a 3/4 angle is harder; you have to know both the profile and the front view, it challenges your sense of 3d construction a ton, and not everyone really has the time to invest in improving their art enough to eliminate that challenge, so I I figure as long as you're either getting what you want out of your current skill, or are challenging yourself enough, the profile view is great, and if you want to push yourself, the 3/4 is awesome
