Once upon a time, there was an Elven king. He had everything he could ever wish for. He was rich and he ruled over wealthy and prospering kingdom. But most of all he loved his only daughter and planned to marry her to the prince of the neighbour kingdom, to tighten the bonds of peace and trade with its king.
But one day, the king was befallen by a mysterious illness. No healer and no wizard knew what kind of sickness it was or how it could be cured. No medicine worked and no spell had any effect. The king´s condition went worse and worse by each passing month. His daughter, the princess, couldn´t see the suffering of her father and so she sneaked outside the castle and asked every healer in every village, she consulted witches and monks and wise trees and even the dragons of old. – But no one had an answer to her.
The oldest dragon of all told her, that there was an island far away behind the last ocean. On this island there lived the folk that were able to even hear the gods voices. It is said that they knew the answer to every single question and that their words even banished the worst desease.
The princess traveled to the shores of the ocean and went on a ship that brought her out into the last ocean. Many days and nights she searched on the horizon for the last island to appear. But to no avail. Her hope started to vanish and she feared to find only her dead father in his crypt, when she would came home, that it was already too late for him.
Suddenly there was a storm coming up and the ship with the princess on board was driven away from its course. The sails were ripped apart by the stormy winds and many poor sailors found their early grave under the waves. At the end the mountain-high waves led the ship towards a sandy coast where it stranded. The princess, the captain and seven of his sailors survived and left the wrecked ship to find themselves on the last island, as it was described in the old legends of the dragons.
The princess felt new hope in her heart and together they started to explore the paradise like island. They found the ruins of an ancient culture, abandoned houses and temples, only the animals of the forest lived there.
Suddenly a strange man came out of one of the houses. He was huge like a giant, horned like a devil, his ears were formed like feathered wings and his face was like an ape. He greeted the visitors with friendly words and invited them into his house, where he dressed their wounds and treated them in the best way a guest could think of. He told them that he was the last one living from the old race that could hear the gods voices and that all his friends and family had already died long ago. Only their treasures and the knowledge of their priests still remained in the ruins.
When the sailors and their captain heard this, they wished nothing more than to find those treasures and become rich men. The princess only wished to know what could cure her father. The giant told her that the berries of the late summer were the cure to the sickness that had befallen her father the king. He led her to the place on the island, where those berries could be found. The princess was very grateful, but as soon as she held the berries in her hands, her heart was covered with sadness.
“You fear what will happen to you when your father is to his old self again, don´t you?” said the giant softly. “Yes. He wants to marry me to the prince of another kingdom, whom I am not loving at all.” She replied. “But I must du my duty.” – “Tell me your story,” the giant said. And the princess told him everything. Her wishes, her fears, she revealed to him everything she never had to anyone. And the giant comforted her as her inner pain overwhelmed her.
They spent all the time together and walked together, had long talks and they enjoyed the peaceful time on this lonely island. And soon the princess realized that she had fallen in love with this giant. He listened to her, he understood her and her feelings and he was so gentle and caring. And the giant found somebody who accepted him. She was beautiful and polite, and her heart was pure like the clear water in a fountain.
Meanwhile the captain and the sailors had build a new ship with what they found on the island. They had carried away all the gold from the temple and now they planned to make the giant their captive, to sell him as a slave to the king and they even planned to take the princess hostage for to get ransom for her freedom. The greed in their hearts didn´t let them think of any consequences of their deeds.
As the princess and the giant returned to the lost city, the sailors pointed their weapons at them and told them to surrender. The giant didn´t want to fight and so the sailors tied him up and brought him and the princess to their new ship. The giant was bound to the mast and so they left the island for to find a way home to the kingdom of the princess. Nothing the princess could do or say convinced the men to cease their plans. She had no chance then to resign.
They sailed for many days and nights. The princess didn´t leave the giant and stayed by him in the cold nights, comforting him like he comforted her, she gave him hugs and sang gentle songs for him. The sailors had only the gold and their future wealth in mind. So none of them didn´t see how the princess managed to steal a knife and hid it under her dress.
The next night the sailors found to their shock that the ropes were cut in two and there was no sign from the princess and the giant. They weren´t on the ship any longer, must have jumped into the sea. Blind with greed, they turned their ship and started to search for their hostages, but they went lost somewhere out on the sea and nobody ever had heard of them.
The princess never returned to her kingdom, but one night her father found the berries from the island on his bedside table and he understood, that his daughter had saved his life but never ever would came back again. He grieved for his lost daughter. He became well again.
Nobody knows where the princess had gone to. She never came back from the sea. Some rumors had it that she had found the last island behind the last ocean. Some said that she died because of the storm that wrecked her ship.
The Princess and the giant had gone forever. Old sailors kept the legend alive. It is said that, whenever somebody looks with a sad heart out on the sea, there can be heard two gentle voices singing together. Another legend tells about a black whale and a white dolphin to swim along ships, that carry loving couples to bring them luck. .

That was a lovely little story and went very nicely with the picture, and could very well have been another version of the beauty and the beast fairy tale with that being such an old story. Though in this version the 'beast' being already a compassionate and noble being despite his fierce appearance he finds happiness and true love with the princess and doesn't have to 'die' and become a handsome prince but stay as his true self, which I think makes for a nicer ending really. Probably one of your sweetest pieces, with both the story and the picture to complement each other.
Loved the story partner and the pic! The princess and the beast's relationship sorta reminded me of John Smith and Pocahontas; mainly cuz in the pic you drew here has the strong male character tied to a wooden pole and the delicate female comforting him with soft touches to the face and neck. Kinda like in Pocahontas but that is another story. I also liked how you shed some light on the greed and selfishness that is presented in mankind and of all walks of life. Even tho this beast man is tied up and helpless he seems happy to have a beautiful companion by his side while the ship is sailing through the ocean. Great Job!
