This poor Roman soldier fell asleep at his post (a 20 mile march the day before exhausted him). As punishment, his commanding officers wanted to try a new punishment. They had him lay down before they quickly bound him with ropes. One of them went to his feet and started unlacing his caligae (sandals). "This will be more painful to us than it is to you" he told him as he pulled off his footwear. The officer winced at the cheesy odor that came from the Roman's feet. "Hopefully your punishment doesn't mind your unwashed feet". The other officer brought forth a goat as the soldier wiggled his bare toes in nervousness. "Punishment for falling asleep at the post is 2 hours....no, let's make it four hours". At this, the goat started licking at the Roman's pungent and dirty feet. The Roman winced and squirmed, not only from the ticklish sensation but also in fear of the goat biting his feet. "Do you think we are being too hard on him?" one officer asked the other. "No, this is mercy compared to the old punishment of crucifixion. Hopefully he learns his lesson now" he said as they walked away from the laughing Roman and hungry goat.
