They call that 'screaming'? O.o Weird. Then how do you explain the groups who actually scream through their songs?
Uhh, anyway, I've never found this vocal style to be appealing or worthwhile in any way, but I've heard it enough that I can tell you're on the right track for what you're trying to do, you'll just have to practice until you're totally comfortable with it. It does sound like you're either a little unsure of yourself, or just unused to it, which you yourself said.

I've found that most bands that actually do true screams are doing it completely wrong and destroying their vocal chords in the process. Groups like Avenged Sevenfold, Lamb of God and Cradle of Filth are using similar strategies to get their vocals to sound like they do.
But yeah, I literally discovered that I could do this yesterday, so not used to it yet is definitely the issue. Just gotta practice, as with all worthwhile things.
