I ended up doing a different grip type that works a bit better. These grooves have 90 degree edges making these extra grippy if a little less elegant.

Also, I added a breakaway chain that can be attached to a carabiner. If you need to grab it fast, the chain breaks with zero noticeable effort. You could even pull it off while striking.

The chain also gives you the option of either keeping your keys on or off of the kubotan in case you have a preference to keep them off. There are some who might debate that this weapon is more effective on it's own, and while I might agree in the case of a trained fighter, I think that the average person will be more effective with a heavy ring of keys attached because:

1: While you are swinging at your target, the keys will also be swinging and causing collateral damage. So, for example, if you are swinging at their nose or clavicle, your keys will be swinging into their eyes.

2: It gives you more range. Your swinging keys will add another 4-6 inches to this thing meaning your reach might be longer than theirs.

3: It's distracting. While your opponent has to focus on the keys, your kubotan and your fist, you only need to focus on hitting them in spots that will do the most damage. (eyes, nose, philtrum, neck, temple, between the jaw and ear, clavicle)
