My displacement map (in case anyone wants to give me pointers!): [click]
So I used that torso study I did not long ago as a test piece for displacement maps. It ended up taking longer than I expected, but part of that was fiddling around to figure out how to do it. But still, I nearly painted the piece three times over. The original shading of the skin, reshading the displacement map (I found out you really cant use the shading you already have), then painting over the displaced tattoo to fix weird looking areas and tweak the design a bit. As you can see from the example linked in Yunner's description, I didn't actually keep the tattoo design 100% loyal to their design, I ended up messing with a couple areas to fit in better with my composition.
I think the end result is nice, but I'm not sure that its actually faster than painting patterns by hand in the first place (that was my hope). However it might look more accurate? If so that would be a plus, but I'm a little skepical. Maybe I just need more practice? I should do something fully freehand to compare as well.
TL;DR - another technique experiment, enjoy.
