cool. You can make your own potash if you burn wood sort of halfway and then run water through the ashes but its a lot harder to get an idea of how strong it is which is why i generally prefer lie as well. Also i found that you can use vegetable fats like Crisco if true lard is unavailable but those have this strange effect where the soap gets this semi translucent layer at the bottom. its solid and still soap but i think its due to the lye reacting to the oils as opposed to just the fats.
