It's a trick that was taught to me but I can't remember where, though.
You color the whole thing dark, use a lighter color to pat some onto where you want it, then brush over the edges with the dark color and a softer brush to blend one part down. he way I do it's a little gritty, but it'll look better when you try it. ;)
