I like making my rigs as readable as possible.
Makes it easy to concentrate on the movement without looking at the mesh deformation.
And I get a robot out of it every time :D

So what software was this done in? He's lookin pretty nice so far! I'm really wanting to do stuff like this too but I beat myself up SO badly. I keep trying to do the sculpted model first, and then build a low-poly mesh from that. But I scare myself away from the sculpting step no matter how good my base mesh is, for some weird reason. I wish you luck with whatever projects you have in mind for this critter!
