As a young woman Lydia had always been good about determining what the adults were saying but would not tell the children. It provided her mother considerable consternation. As she grew older she found a group called the Oracles, individuals who offered advice and guidance to the world as they traveled in exchange for things they needed. Rumors persisted that the group had psychic abilities or some way to see the future but the reality was simply Oracles were sensitive to signals people gave off without realizing it.
Lydia joined the Oracles and trained under Oracle Eris at the main temple at Elaris. It was then she set out on her own as a wandering Oracle rather than being bound to a temple. She traveled from place to place offering her services until one day she camped in the Wandering Forest where she met Ethan Hargrove and Rhodes Lawson, and shortly after joined their group.
Personal Statement
"My name is Lydia McLaren. I'm what they call an Oracle. I suppose the name has something to do with why most people think we can see the future. We can't really, though I hear there are ways to do so. Anyway, we just know how to read people and how to tell when someone is lying. It's not a perfect system, we're not anything otherworldly. We just listen to what the universe tells us. You'd be surprised what most people ignore.
I joined the Oracles because I've always been good about reading what people desire without being able to admit it to themselves. They broadcast it so loudly to the universe at large it's amazing they're oblivious to it but sometimes they need someone to push them on that extra step. I found with the Oracles I had a place to belong. They took me in and considered me one of their own. As I trained under Eris I learned two things. One, that I did not wish to be bound to the temples. Two, that I was meant for this.
I set out one day after I had completed my training and wandered the expanse of Akaeria. It was such a remarkable land with so many interesting sights. I found my curiosity insatiable as I wished to find out why people chose to live in certain places and what they loved about their homes and lives as a whole. I suppose you could say I was drawn to what makes people passionate.
I set out to camp one day in a placed called the Winding Forest. While there, I ran across two gentlemen in a cart with a Doberman woman. I could not tell for certain but I sensed this was no accident. I asked them to camp with me and they agreed. I could tell there was more between them than simple proximity, though I could not know what awaited us at the time."

Ooh, neat. I've been looking forward to art of Lydia. She's quite a lovely girl, and she looks really elegant in that beautiful lavender dress. She is, I must admit, rather different than how I had imagined her. Maybe it's just that she's called an Oracle, but I had somehow gotten the impression that she was somewhat older than her 24 years and a bit more matronly in appearance. Which, I suppose, goes to show what stereotypes and assumptions will get you. But that's also why I really enjoy getting to see all the different pictures of your characters, since it gives me a clearer idea of how they look.
I really like her attitude, especially her determination to use her talents as she pleases and to see the world rather than be stuck away in a temple somewhere. It's an interesting mixture of independence, hinting almost at rebelliousness, and responsibility that makes her seem like a really fascinating person. And one who would certainly be an asset to her friends and allies.
Luthien did an amazing job with her, too!

I had a feeling she would be right in Luthien's wheelhouse seeing as she had done scalies before and does a great job with fantasy elements. I think the dress came from a design
sabretoothedermine did for me or maybe the idea was mine but I don't remember... Anyway, I decided after I started work on the comic the Oracles all wore breezy dresses or the male equivalent and the gold spiral on their arm denoting membership. It made sense especially since Rhodes recognizes what she is based on her clothes.
I suspect the name Oracle was given to them by outsiders based on their uncanny ability to read people and the things they don't say. Lydia makes the point a few times that people assume things about them based on that so I suppose it's not surprising you did too, hehe. :)
A lot of what the Oracles are and how they fit in came about as I was working on the comic and in fact Lydia in general. I forget where the concept came about but when developing the group I had this thought about what if there was this group who knew what you knew before you realized you knew it. They would not have powers or abilities beyond normal perception, but I thought knowing people, they'd assume they did. I liked the realism of the fact that many people don't realize how they broadcast things to others, and through that the Oracles could help people through their daily challenges by simply pointing it out. When I'd decided on that, Lydia became part of the group and after she helps them out in the comic, stays with them. I'd had plans for her which got shifted around a bit through the structure is largely the same, and she has a big effect on Journeys for all the influence she had shaping the Oracles and their position in the story.
Lydia is definitely the type that likes to wander and see what's over the next hill rather than be the type to wait for people to come to her with their problems. She's respectful of her superiors but the Oracles are definitely free spirits as they say. Lydia would definitely be the 'everything happens for a reason' type and the 'right place at the right time' sort of person, though of course she knows we have influence on how things develop as well. ;)
