ZBrush is mostly designed to be used to add detail to existing character meshes, or to create entirely new character meshes from scratch. It's also designed to allow you to do all sorts of texture trickery. Animation isn't really the strong point of ZBrush, but you can basically export a lot of what you make in ZBrush out into other programs, where you can animate from there.
