I need a morale boost to keep spirits up, though... a quick "cookie-cutter is ok when you're learning" should suffice (as much as I hate to think that, it's true, and I need to have it yelled in my face before I throw something out (the window) in frustration)...

The first step to learning to draw is the same first step to learning to ride a bike, or learning to bake. You won't get it right the first couple times, and if you give up, you'll never get better at it. But if you persevere, and continue to practice, you'll learn to do it. There's no possible way you can fail, as long as you're stubborn enough to keep trying.
I hope that helped. =)

I tried attempting a bit of your eye style in my latest sketchbook entry; I don't think I did a good job of it.
