The Tiger
By William Blake
TIGER, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
In what distant deeps or skies
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand dare seize the fire?
And what shoulder and what art
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat,
What dread hand and what dread feet?
What the hammer? what the chain?
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? What dread grasp
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?
When the stars threw down their spears,
And water'd heaven with their tears,
Did He smile His work to see?
Did He who made the lamb make thee?
Tiger, tiger, burning bright
In the forests of the night,
What immortal hand or eye
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?

Thank you to WickedSairah for the name suggestion. Spent about the last 2 weeks bouting insomnia, moreso than usual. I sketched a rough version of this and decided since I wasn't sleeping anyway to go ahead and see what comes of it, if anything. I had always loved the cliche posters of tigers stalking forward, howevr cliche it does boast a powerful presence..so I decided why not try it with an anthroish cat? I knew, however, after I got some sleep that I would dislike much of it (more specifically the stripes on the back). If I decide to paint this, supposing I have the time and still like the idea, I will redo the stripes on the back to match better with the designs on his face. My absolute favorite part of all of this was the paws, I've gone through several different similar poses (most of them either more frontal or more of a sideview) but all of them ended up obscuring at least one of the paws completely..and seeing as I adore big feline paws, I just couldn't have that. I thought about redoing the whole sketch since I ended up thinking I started a wee bit too small for what I wanted to accomplish, but I'm not sure I have the patience to do another sketch annnd a painted version.
compositional/design critique welcome before I decide whether I want to paint this or not. Thank you guys, oftentimes your advice is truly helpful!!

can i fave this i have such a hard time with forshortening real antho-animaliods?!:)
and the stripes are rippling strength, i hear , nothing in his creep, i see silence and explosion posible in this work, it helps to create a story even without William Blake!
I'm replying to the picture before i read the prose.

depends on the picture..I drew this one initially from my head and when I went to refine it made sure to track down some references on tiger paws/faces/stripes. With moost pieces I sketch the initial idea and then find references to make sure I try and get things correct in the final rendering..though even then I can see my own mistakes after I finish the pieces ;).
I adore your works Balaa, they got a special attitude.
My only critique is about the bacground, the part of the mountains, I think it does look like to close for the body of the tiger, and looks like odd. Maybe a bit of blur of fade out for the mountains would fix it, but your`re the artyist here.
So, overall, I love this piece. :D

Okay, intelligent comment time.
What blows my mind about this most is the stripes. I've seen a few tigers before drawn with "tribal tattoo" type stripes, but they never seem to fit with the animal -- they look painted on. Not this one. Not by far. The fact that you've integrated them so perfectly into the fur texture and the "normal" stripe pattern makes this so fantastically naturalistic that I can't help but gawk like an idiot. Add to that the fact that the play between negative and positive space in the fore- and background alike continue the stripey theme without making it too busy or crowding out the tiger himself, and...I am in awe. Vast amounts of awe.
Very, VERY well done.

(Grar, FA is not letting me +Fav this.. oh, there it goes! Yay!)
One of my favorite poems of all time! Yay! And beautifully rendered!!!! I LOVE the integration of the stripes on the body, and the crouching pose is perfect - it shows off his back-stripes to wonderful effect!

<3I remember that poem^_^How did you manage to get the details in the fur of the tiger??? I've been trying to do that for the longest time and have yet to succeed>_<Oh well. Tigers are one of my fav animals and I just simply must fav this. Awsome and goregous picture.
Awesome piece. I love the stripes and richness of detail... You've managed very well to make the tiger work work with the surroundings but still have him "stick" out of it clearly... If I'm making any sense.
Nevertheless, I'm not good enough to see anything but absolutely perfect piece ;)

The symmetry and beauty of nature again^^ Another piece from you that is still and totally impressive and just wonderful. The stripes alone are awesome and together with the rest, this is a damn nice picture of a really gorgeous animal. It is even more impressive, if you keep in mind that you did this in traditional media....
