A little tribute to my favourite football team, Ipswich Town, who won 3-2 against our hated local rivals Norwich City in April 2009; a result which pretty much condemned Norwich to relegation (i.e. 'going down') to Football League One for the first time in 50 years. For those not in the know, the Norwich mascot is a tiny canary, while ours is a big white horse - sounds like an uneven contest! No wonder we're the best team in Anglia!!
This is actually the first of two football-themed pictures I hope to complete this month, though the next one will be altogether more serious - and, I hope, much more sexy. This one was just for fun, and I did rather enjoy it. Sadly I don't know of many football fans in the fandom, apart from
dragonfireny and
RedDD who have provided me with my much-needed fix of football chat! Thanks, you guys!!
(Oh, and if you're not familiar with the 'Goin' Down' chant, the words are simply repeated over-and-over to the tune of "Stars and Stripes Forever". Lol!

Heh - they already went down! Sunday was the last day of the Championship season, and Norwich had to win and hope Barnsley lost. Instead, Barnsley won 2-1 at Plymouth, and Norwich lost 4-2 at Charlton. So cheerio, Canaries! Lol!
You a football fan, then?
You a football fan, then?
Heh - I've been too busy watching DVDs so your comment is actually the first I've heard of the score! Michael Essien, I see. Looks promising! I must admit, if it does end up being a United v Chelsea Champs League final again, I hope you win this time. ;)
Dunno if you remember but your lot knocked us out of the FA Cup this year! Chelsea 3-1 Ipswich in the 4th round. I couldn't make it but I was so fired up after our equaliser! Heh!

I actually live a long way away from Ipswich so I only get to away games; probably about 10 per season. I enjoy the variety of travelling support, but Ipswich have been pretty bad on the road in recent seasons (though we were about the 3rd best team away from home in the Championship). A bit different from your experiences, I dare say! Heh!
Indeed - how much I'd love to see us get into the Premiership next season while Norwich are still fumbling around in the lower divisions with Colchester and Southend. BLUE ARMY!!
Another football fan, eh? Maybe I should have posted something like this sooner!

Ah! Well in that case, allow me to wish you the best of luck in the FA Cup final - I think it's about time you guys lifted a trophy again. ;)
Sadly, I won't get to see whether you win it or not - my damn university has scheduled me for a politics exam at 2:00 on 30th May! Bastards!
Nice to meet you anyway. I like finding fellow English football fans in the fandom. It feels like there are too few of us.

Heh - well at my university, they schedule exams on any day from Monday to Saturday. I've had some on Saturday mornings before, but not the afternoon. Sadly, because the Premier League season seems to be finishing so late this year (still don't know why), the FA cup final just happens to have ended up during the exam period. :(
Heh - I'm afraid I have no idea what LJ even is!

How's about instead of cluttering up the Kent countryside, they build it outside my house? Does that count as a legitimate suggestion? I'd request for one huge hoof to be raised to the level of my bedroom window. What a perfect view to wake up to... Lol!
Ha ha...yeah, that canary is going down into the dirt by the look of it...
Great art, as always...shame I'm not really a football fan, although my home team managed to dodge renegation despite playing rubbish for most of the season.
Oh, and did ya watch the World Snooker Championship Rippy? What did you make of it?

I did - in fact me and m bro were at The Crucible on 22nd April for all three sessions. We saw the legendary Steve Davis perhaps making his last World Championship appearance, we saw Neil Robertson, Stephen Maguire, Jamie Burnett, Michael Holt, Andrew Higginson - and best of all, we also saw both of the finalists, Shaun Murphy and John Higgins, playing their first round matches (though Murphy was bloody awful against Higginson; not quite sure how he made it so far!) Definitely worth the trip, I can say!
I was secretly hoping Mark Selby would go all the way this year, but out of the two finalists, I'm glad Higgins took it. He probably won't be at the top of his game for many more years, and he's someone who deserves to be in that elite bunch of three-or-more World Championship titles. But the standard was brilliant this year - so many centuries, and so many shocks too.
"Your home team"... I forget, which team is that? I keep thinking Man City but I'm not sure if that was you or not...

Ooh, lucky you! Yeah, I was glad to see John Higgins win the final, although I feel sorry for anyone who got tickets for the last session of the final...they didn't get to see much snooker! I was also happy to see Stephen Hendry make a maximum...I'm a fan of his, I was hoping he would beat Murphy.
My home team would be Carlisle Utd. They're pretty bad, but the nearly got promoted last season.

Carlisle! Yes, I remember you losing 2nd place to Forest at the last moment last season. I thought you'd build on it this year but it's been a bit of a shocker. Glad you avoided the drop.
I was hoping Murphy might get back into that final. We had the same problem in our 2nd session on 22 April - Robertson was already 7-2 up on Davis from the previous day, and Davis was awful, so we only saw 3 frames as Robertson won 10-2. But then they raised the curtain, so we saw 4 frames of Higgins playing against Holt!

Oh, and yes, I was also very pleased for Hendry. It was actually quite exciting when we were at the Maguire v Burnett match, because Maguire was going for a 147 in that game. I think he got as far as having 3 reds left, then he missed a black to the left-middle and it was all over. It must be great to see something like that live!
Unfortunately I didn't see Hendry's maximum live. I only heard about it and saw it afterwards with commentary by Steve Davis and John Parrott. I wish I had been following the match when he made it.
Still, I bet it was cool getting to watch the snooker live at the crucible! How close were ya to the action? Also, did you bother with a commentators headset or not?

Yeah, we did buy the earphones. (£5 each?!! They make their bloody money's worth at The Crucible, don't they!!) They're a bit fiddly; there's two little buttons on them, and you have to use the "Tune" button to choose the right frequency for your commentary. Took a little while to get going each time, and I always seemed to end up tuning in to the wrong table to begin with! But they're definitely worth getting, should you ever make the trip yourself. Plus, you can keep them and bring them back the next time you visit, and they'll still work!
Sadly I didn't see Hendry's maximum live on TV either. It's nice if you can see it happen on TV, though as I say, we got particularly excited at The Crucible because Maguire was looking on course for a 147 right in front of us in that frame I spoke about earlier. That would've been quite something to see!
Unfortunately, we weren't fantastically close. We were under the blue lights nearer the back throughout the day. There's 16 rows of seats in The Crucible (it's really not very big). The closest we got was Row L (row 12) in the first session, then we were in M in the afternoon, and right at the back row in the evening! Lol! You can still see everything perfectly clearly though, so it doesn't matter.
It was very cool though. Me and my bro are determined to go again. It was £41 each for the whole day (£12 for the morning, £12 for the afternoon and £17 for the evening). Considering I've paid nearly £30 for 90mins of dogshit at some Ipswich games in recent years, £41 for over 12 hours of top-class snooker was well worth the money!

How much I'd love a trip to White Hart Lane. And it'd be a particularly interesting game if Darren Bent was still at Spurs...! But let's not get ahead of ourselves. I was certain we'd get promoted a few years back; we were 5pts clear at the top of the table in mid-February 2005, but then picked up 1pt from the next 4 matches and threw it away. It's tough, this division. But then, Roy Keane's tough too...!
Heh - Pompey eh? I remember us beating you guys 3-0 the year you won the Division 1 title in 2003, though you've just been our FA Cup bogey team on 2 occasions since then! Lol! Thanks for the support anyway, and I hope you guys steer clear of relegation trouble this season.
Too bad Chelsea got screwed by that ref.
I dont blame the ref entirely. But he sure as shit better not ref anymore games. The Blues should have put that game away multiple time over but in light of what happened...that ref fucked up big time.
The better team went on to Rome, the best team didnt.

Indeed. I didn't see the game last night, but one only needs to see the vast amount of media coverage surrounding that ref today, and the fact that he was secretly moved to another hotel before being quietly smuggled out of the country, to appreciate that his decisions have been unanimously condemned. Reminds me of Anders Frisk.
Its bad. Im from America, a country where soccer (football) isnt a big thing. Soccer fans are some of the most die hard of any sport. They have a stereotype reputation here of being nuts because of reasons like this.
He made some horrible calls, this is his 2nd big screw up, but he is still only human. More importantly, ITS A GAME.
Its sad that people are giving him death threats and he is publicly being humiliated. It really is sad to see people ruining a mans life over some bad sports refing calls. :/ Blues fan or not. Chelsea is also getting some real bad rep from this. Is no wonder people will 'hate chelsea'
By the way, this picture was really fun :D

Football (soccer) fans have gained a bad reputation, particularly English ones. There was an English football hooligan culture in the 1970s and 1980s which gave everyone outside of football and outside of England that all English fans were thugs who wanted to cause trouble. It's hugely inaccurate; the hooligan culture has been largely stomped out in the last 20 years.
The reaction to this referee has been over-the-top. He'll struggle to get another Champions League match any time soon, particularly if it is in England (and especially at Stamford Bridge). Drogba's reaction, whilst understandable given his frustration, was totally unprofessional. He has since apologised though.
Oh, and thanks for the comment on the picture!

Heh - by OT I presume you mean overtime, though we don't do that for league matches here in England. But yes, it's almost inevitable that one day we'll be upset by Norwich or find ourselves slipping below them. But in the meantime, we can celebrate! Lol!
In league matches in this country, if the scores are tied after a full 90min football match, the game finishes as a draw, and each team gets one league point (as opposed to three if you win and none if you lose). We don't have overtime (or extra time, as it is called in this country) unless it is a one-leg or final-leg cup match, in which case a tied match continues after 90mins; firstly with 30mins of 'extra time', then a penalty shootout. In some ways, it's similar to NHL, but the use of tiebreakers is much more sparing.
The face is a little... off but other than that, great pic as usual. X3 I'm lucky because in my town the mascot is a big sexy spartan, and some people draw him really well with big muscles and big feet. That's for soccer, for regular american "football" our town mascot is a bronco. Maybe he's stomping friends with you guys' big horse there?
Newcastle, eh? Oh dear. They are not having a good season at all. In fact, if they get relegated from the Premier League this month, they'll be playing Ipswich next season, and I might get to go to St. James' Park myself!
Interesting to see that you are interested in English football despite being from Poland. Are there no Polish teams that take your fancy?

Lol - I wouldn't know. I must admit I haven't heard or seen anything of a Barcelona mascot. I guess not every side has one, though many English sides seem to.
A Barca fan, are you? I'd look out if I were you - there's a Chelsea fan who has been posting on this submission!! Lol!
Whereabouts are you from?

Ohio? Interesting! Didn't know there if were any followers of the Spanish game in the US.
And yes, I think all football fans would quite like to get the opportunity to witness el classico. I'd love to go to the Nou Camp at some point - I remember some relatives of mine went there and showed me their photos. It really is absolutely huge.

Hi RipRoarRex!
I'm not a fan of "stomping", but I thought this artwork was very cute!
Poor canary! But I love how you captured the rivalry between the mascots of the two sporting teams!
I love birds, and I feel sympathetic for the poor canary!
Nice artwork! You have a great style to your work!

Never a dull East Anglian derby. Always plenty of goals, controversy, action... great viewing.
So do you fall on either side of the divide?
