The genetics lab shook as the foundation was pulled apart. Dr. Tiffany Hammond let out a cough of terror as she brought up the video recorder, "I don't know how much time I have left. In case I don't make it out of this I want the world to know the truth."
The video feed shook as another wave of quakes ran through the building. A piece of paneling fell from the rafter nearly striking the doctor as she continued, "We sought to find a cure for all viruses on the planet and in our attempt to play god we found the ability to splice DNA. The creature we code named "MegaloMont" has exceeded any of our hopes. The rapid growth of the creature is unprecedented, with every object if consumes the creature grows larger. It has broken free of it chains and soon it will be free into an unsuspecting world. I am going to attempt one last effort to stop the beast. If I don't make it, just know I am sorry. We sought to create the ultimate creature, and we succeeded.”
The red light of the recording device went off as Tiffany began pressing keys on the keyboard in front of her. When she was done she scanned the maps of the building for a way to the feeding lab where, she hoped to find a way to stop the beast.
It was one floor below her on the opposite side of the building but, with the creature tearing its way through the floor she was on now, the room might as well be on the other side of the planet. Her legs shook with fear of what her mind was contemplating. Right now MegaloMont was in the live stock room devouring the other test subjects. The cries of the animals sounded almost human as their bodies were undoubtedly being pulled to shreds. The worst part was that the only stairs were just past that same room.
Cracking the door slightly the doctor scanned the hallway for any sign of the beast. It was clear, except for the remains and blood that lay in the creature’s path.
With a deep breath she pulled the door open enough to slide her body out. Slowly she crept down the hall as she regretted wearing her tennis shoes with the red lights that flashed with each step. She now hated the idea of "casual" Friday's and wished she had worn her white lab wear. If her boss Dr. Beary hadn't had his head ripped off an hour before, she might consider doing that to him if she made it out of this alive. Her heart ached for her companion, but he want of life kept her from mourning his passing. If she could just lore the beast to the feeding lab she might be able to trick it into the titanium holding cell and tranquilize it before it makes it to the outside world.
She bit her lip as her shoes squeaked on the slick floor. The sound of flesh being devoured silenced, it must have heard her. She looked around franticly for somewhere, anywhere she could hide. Jolting forward she spun into the bathroom in front of her, closing the door as fast and silently as possible. She held her breath as large, pounding, clawed feet came closer and closer.
This was it, she was a goner the beast had a sharp nose and the power to tear a door off a tank, the wooden door of the bathroom would be nothing for the monster. How ironic she would be in a bathroom, because she thought she was going to wet herself.
The footsteps stopped at the door. One second, two seconds, then three, four, and five, it found her. This was it, it smelled the door, and she would fail before even trying. Then silence and clack, clack, clack, it was moving on. It hadn't broken in, she still had a chance. She waited another minute before peering into the hall way again. It looked clear so she made her way back out into the hallway.
Ten feet up was the live stock room, if you could call it that now. It was in essence the feeding room now. She swallowed hard before stepping past the door way that set on one hinge; the creatures mass had doubled, no tripled while it was feeding.
On the count of three the brave doctor stepped forward and looked in and what she saw engulfed her emotions. Animals, well what was left of them, were strewn across the floor and tables. The cages were toppled and peeled apart by the creature’s massive jowls.
She continued forward, when the sound that would send shivers down her spine for the rest of her life came from down the hall behind her. "BOOOWWWWWRRAAH" it thundered again, it had found her, and through the glint of her glasses she saw the flash of the creature’s massive fin as she sprinted for the stairs, hitting the emergency lock button as she turned the corner to descend. A loud "whoosh" came as the metal doors slide locking shut, followed by a loud "Thud" as the creature slammed into it.
"That won't hold him long." She said to herself as she scrambled for the door, "Whoever thought mixing a massive land animal with a megalodon was an idiot." She sped down the stairs hitting the last step when the doors burst open by the shear mass of MegaloMont. He tumbled down the stairs the screeching it's monstrous howls.
Tiffany screamed as she rushed down the hallway. Thirty feet, just thirty more feet and she would be in the room. After that another ten feet she could get into the tranquilizer supply box. The creature was gaining on her. Its massive claws crunching into the floor as it bounded forward. The creatures large fin crapping the ceiling, shredding it like butter. It was just a few feet away. She slid to her right into an open doorway.
The creature lunged for her and missed as its weight continued forward down the hall, his jaws missing her leg by millimeters. She spun back out and watched it roll down the hall and took off. This was it, her final moments. Her sprint became lunges as she jumped for the feeding room door.
MegaloMont bellowed out a ferocious call as it pursued her once again. She had seconds before it would be on her, to end her. She rushed to the box trying frantically to open the latches. The beast Growled from the door way. She turned as she got one of the lathes free. It stepped forward, like a predator about to take down its prey. The last latch was stuck, she pulled it. Clack, the beast stepped forward. Clack, another foot, Tiffany pulled with all her might, and "Pop" the latch came free, though it was too late. She screamed as the beast lunged onto her.
"What's going on in here?" Boomed an authoritative female voice.
"Mom" The seven year old girl squealed as her large Basset hound assaulted her with licks to the face. "I was just eaten by the terrifying MegaloMont." she giggled. "He broke free and the animals in the lab."
"Uh huh, he did, did he? So how many of your stuffed animals did he get this time."
Tiffany pushed the fat hound off her lap and opened the treat box. Tossing him one of the chicken flavored biscuits, he caught it mid air and trotted off still wearing the stuffed shark fin costume her parents had gotten for Halloween. "He got a lot of them, and he bit Mr. Beary's head off. Can you sew it back on?" she asked.
Sighing, the young girl’s mother turned to the cabinet draw beside her and retrieved a sewing kit. "Go get him." she said as she headed for the living room. She sat down on the sofa and stared at the fat dog plopped down in the middle of the room, "You are a monster alright, MegaloMont.
Enjoy.
