"Bloodlines... bloodlines are complicated, always have been but especially these days. Since the inception of the first exo-womb DNA could come from anywhere. It could even be synthetically derived and as such a bloodline could go on long after the last descendant passed into legend. Finding out your bloodline is rich with historical figures is thrilling. It's not everyday you find out you're related to a ruthless liquor baron, an infamous merchant marine... and especially amazing is to find out you're related to an actual Knight of the Shepard's Guard! But by the old gods digging up archival evidence of lineage even with modern systems takes an ungodly amount of effort. That's not even accounting for the period gaps in the genealogical records. There are 13.476 year of recorded history, meticulously preserved and presented before me and I'm still vexingly sans many answers!
Most people use these archives to look up their ancestors back what, five or so generations but me? I'm one of those fair few... okay millions of people who search way further than that this sounded cooler before I said it. Ah, here we go the excerpt I was looking for. A bit of preserved writing from the private memoir of one Asardin Senbu Hamash Basten, Shepard's 3rd Guard Captain of Fenisa, the capital of ancient Fenia now Rampart City. Ancient Fenia, my homeland... man how long ago was this? ... 4000 years? More?
"By Tal'Phorous I think I might be getting the hang of this. Walking the ramparts and streets, showing the brass colors of the Shepard's fire and reminding people that the raging inferno of our destiny still burns as bright as Tal'Phorous himself. Those deceitful braggarts from the across the sea will never make it to our walls, I'll ensure it. Yet... I find myself doubting, how could a mere beggar rise from barely living to patrolling in shining splendor like this? To protecting the city whose streets he once thought he'd meet the shepard's shadow on? Captain Salash is a good speaker but he's about as charming as sand is course and grinding... what did the order see in me?
Being a Shepard's Guard is a sacred, albeit ominous duty. I am Guard, Apothecary, Minister, Soldier and Priest... A prestigious position yet If the order is seeking new members now it must mean the front lines are moving further and further back towards the Ruby Walls... oh be still my spirit, steel thyself against the tides. Even with the war on my mind I believe dusk patrols are swiftly becoming my favorite. If only father could see his boys now, shining and blessed by Tal'Phorous and Ish. Though my idiot kin occupies his time with fruitless travels up and down the Ish, I somewhat pray he finds the fortune he seeks. I might have to arrest his fleet footed ass one day... I'll never stop mocking him if it comes to that.
I haven't forgotten that incident with the To'Mari sauce brother! Ah the Ramparts, the Colossus in the distance, the shine of the Ruby Walls. I'll have to talk with Sanadin about taking his patrols on, I simply have to walk the ramparts a few more times like this. My city, my land, my home. None shall cross your walls I promise! By Vow by Blade and Stone I stake my life on this!"
"These words, though the image might be a recreation it's still stunning! Dated 120 years before the invention of black powder! I was right, this was over 4000 years ago, right at the trailing ends of the Mesonean War... Where the Dune and Dale came together and toppled the once mighty Midanthian Empire. This was the lynch pin, the truest starting point of the Continental Union... and from there on, the Commonwealth iktself. How infinitely vast the world must have felt back then, if only my Ancestors could see me... us now. From stone and fire to space and light. Well it's getting awfully late, I should rest for now, morning patrols tomorrow, I need to make a good impression on the Captain!"
An incredible piece of art created for me by Luigiix of Deviant art fames! http://luigiix.deviantart.com/ I absolutely love how this came out and I cannot believe I forgot to put him in here! The shame, the horror! I guess my brain was too tired to remember everything! ;w; well either way, do patronize him (as in be his patrons not the other thing!) if you have moneys and time, because he's a fantastic artist, patient and very, very talented :3
