[This item has been sold (in gallery) in Danville at the FlOW gallery, one of my first pieces to sell publicly. Weeeee! ] :)
Submitted for your approval. A lyrical puffin begins to sing for your pleasure, or pose as an actor upon a stage, pouring out his soul unto you. Behold Troubadour Puffin!
You'll see that this particular work has been photographed. It's a bit too big to scan. It seems much of my work is going this way, getting bigger and more complex.
I'm quite proud of this piece. It's the third in my experimentation with cel painting on acetate. (You'll note the shiny appearance and the reflected camera flash). Also this is a departure for me because I've used an acetate background as well. (The blue is acrylic on acetate completely separate from Mr. Puffin).
Troubadour puffing took me about two weeks to complete and, as always, I learned a great deal from working with this media.
He's going to have a mate soon: an eagle facing in opposite direction and "singing "back" to him. They will both be framed and I'm going to exhibit them at the FLOW gallery next month. The eagle will have a red, white and blue background. Just in time for the 4th of July. ;)
Also, I used special professional grade animator's paint on this piece and it makes the world of difference when painting on acetate. I've got Cel-Vinyl from CartoonColor.com It is, by far, the best paint I've ever used for this type of media and I highly recommend it. This photo doesn't do justice to the absolute richness of the colors.
Let me know what you think. I hope you like Mr Puffin

Thanks so much for the great comment. I'm pleased that the emotion I put into his eyes came through. Puffin's have cool faces, interesting to play around with their features.
I just did the primary inking on the eagle today; hopefully soon you'll get to see his mate!

Well I'm using the animator's tools and crafts but I don't pretend to think that I would have enough time or talent in my life to produce a few minutes of film. I'm using the acetate more for art pieces, which is what animated cels were anyway.
Yes, I'm a retro old, geek for embracing an old style media and putting away the digital tablet for a while.
When I'm done with the puffin's eagle companion they "both" are going to be framed and I'll exhibit them in our local public gallery. I might even sell the pair since they will have patriotic colors and will be on display during the 4th of July!

Oh dude gator! Those paints are like a slice of heaven to work with. The colors are so very rich that it's hard to describe. The picture that I've posted here doesn't even begin to do the actual piece justice.
I like the paints so much that I've ordered a 4oz bottle of their animator's India Ink. (I go through a lot of ink these days) I'm expecting it to be awesome-licious! :D
Thanks so much for the very kind words, Karerease. I was quite pleased with this one too. I think it's my best to date.
I've already started inking on the eagle companion piece and he's going to look pretty dang sweet too. *crows!*

Dude! This is light years ahead of your last couple of pieces in this medium. Serious progress, and I'm sure you're right about the advantage of high-quality tools.
*wing-hugs the puffin* We have puffins out at the coast, and eagles too. (they're all nesting now:>) You did a nice job on the bird's face, simplifying it somewhat but still retaining the character. Can't wait to see that eagle!

Wow, thanks for the great comment. I have to agree with you in that I think this is my best piece to date! __and great quality paints make the difference. He is a bit of a simplified puffin, but that's what I was aiming for (and the cuteness factor) ;)
I'd love to be around puffins and get some great reference photos, alas none around here at all.
The eagle has now been inked on acetate. I have to go over the white outlines again to make them thicker. He's going to be the same as the puffin but different in many respects, if that makes any sense.

I agree. I think puffins are a bit neglected in the fur realm, but very neat, emotive birds. They have cute faces and cute bodies to match. I can envision one in a turn of the century Admiral's uniform and hat! ;)
Thanks so much for the very nice comment on my cel painting. Of course I've got the "singing eagle" framed to match the puffin now..and I'm working on a nice 3D fish scene for my bath room using cel paint and acetate. I just love the media!
I'd love to see what kinds of cel painting you do! It is a pretty fascinating art form.

Technically, aside from cats and dogs people on here don't draw much species wise. And no problem about the comment. As for cel painting, it won't be actual paint media. Can't afford such stuff. It will more than likely be just something sketch like. But it won't be for quite a while since I rarely draw anything.
Puffins were fabulous looking birds with colorful beaks. I remember that one from The Swan Princess an animated movie I watched when I was a kid.
Speaking of my childhood, this bird reminds me so much of my childhood home in the Canadian province of Newfoundland, where the puffin, squid, and moose were official animals. I lived in a small town up there when I was born near Christmas of 1994, but a couple years after I was diagnosed with Autism, I moved out in 2001 to improve my social skills and stuff. Since 2008 I currently live in Calgary, a big city which feels like a totally different world from Newfoundland to me, but at least they have Mary Brown's, my favorite fried chicken joint from Newfoundland.
