By Live WIP, I mean that this submission will get updated as time goes on until I am finished.
I've done this before, but haven't in a while. Especially with small training stuff like this.
But, eh, I don't exactly post every single day, so I could use something.
1)
Here, I have made a test render. Usually I don't save test renders, or I save over them and only have one test render, but I figured I'd save them individually.
Originally, the ground (table) was supposed to be wood, and there wasn't supposed to be a backing. It was just supposed to be a fairly dark scene with the background being blackness.
For some reason I went with slate. I guess because I already had a texture of slate and it was seamless, and I didn't have one of wood. At least not the wood that I wanted.
I decided that a blank backing into nothingness would be boring, and may make things a bit hard to see, so I decided to make a basic backing with whatever the table was.
then I figured that'd be boring, so I decided to make the center of the backing a cobblestone wall.
Not everything in the scene is finished, which is why the stuff in the cup is blank / bare / basic. As I said, this was a test render, and I wasn't thinking of putting up a WIP collage at this point.
2)
I wanted the scene to be dark, but not a lot I can do to edit things if no one can see anything. I changed the world lighting to be bright. I also changed the marshmallow a bit, so it looks like a marshmallow.
I also edited the hot chocolate, and made a slight change to the camera angle. I do like the way this looks, but I want the world to be dark, and I still have some things to edit.
3)
Back to the dark world, but with a change of lighting. Also edited the marshmallow to look better.
4)
Another slight change of camera angle and slight editing of materials and lighting. I also tried to make the cobblestone look more prominent.
5)
I switched the type of lighting, so it's a lot stronger and brighter, and I can angle it better. Made it brighter than what I had before. I also added steam, which is about half the reason I started this practice.
The main focus of this practice scene is to make realistic looking steam and realistic looking foam. As well as get better with modeling, rendering, lighting, etc.
6)
Made the light brighter and changed the angle. Still trying to determine from what angle I like the light, and the strength I need to give it. I also lowered the scaling of the slate texturing.
It was supposed to be seamless, but after looking at it more closely, I could see the repeating seams. I think I also changed the cobblestone wall a bit to look a little less weird.
I tried to make the steam look a little more realistic, did a few material changes, and edited the marshmallow again to look better. Realized it looked a little too wrinkled or something.
I also want to add that it was around this time that the average time of rendering went from a minute and a half to around 2 minutes. Finally, I thickened the handle of the mug.
7)
More lighting and angle changes, as well as a few material edits here and there. Also changed the scaling of the slate again. I also made the hot chocolate darker. Well, not darker, just less reflective.
8)
Another camera change. These are supposed to be test renders after all, so I went with a close up of the main attraction (unless you really like the back walls). Ironically, I used a higher render setting on this.
Took 6 minutes to render instead of 2. I upped the world light just a tad, instead of making it black or dark gray, and I decided go back to the point light instead of the sun light. It is still there though.
The sun light is just really dim, but the point light is now the main light again. I like the soft shadows I could get with the sun light, and that it lit everything up, but I'm going for a certain look here.
I like the way the point light doesn't "uglify" the cobblestone wall, though it doesn't look as good as it should. Luckily this is a work in progress, so I'll try to figure it out.
I tried to up the quality of the steam. I'm trying to get the effect that I have in the editing window, and not the render. Though I need to rotate it. But again, that's why I'm doing this. To practice.
9)
I decided not to change the camera just yet, and focus on the steam. That is most of the focus of this practice submission. I changed around a few render settings, switched the steam around, and tried to give more detail to the cobblestone again.
I only just realized as of writing this that the steam blocks the tiny ripple in the hot chocolate. Though it still doesn't look that convincing to me just yet. I was trying to make the steam look better, but now I guess it looks just like smoke.
The render time for this is about 6 and a half minutes. It's the cobblestone that's doing it all, and takes enough memory to render that I have to use other hardware.
10)
I changed a few more render settings again, and made the environment lighting a bit brighter. I also tried to give extreme detail to the cobblestone to make it look better and see how long it took.
Even on half resolution, the render time shot up to 24 minutes, and to be honest, I barely see any change in detail. While I do see it, some of that change comes from lighting. I'll be reducing the detail to gain some speed.
While I'm not yet done and there is still one more thing IO have to work on, I want to get the steam just right before continuing.
11)
I made the size of the WIP x2 so I can get a better picture of what I'm seeing, even though I can see it fine, heh. I tried to make the steam look more high resolution, but it doesn't look much different from before.
I also changed the lights yet again. I'm trying to get a good dark shot that's bright enough to where you can see everything. I don't want to have to rely on post production, but I may have to do that. My practice pieces always seem to take too long.
I'm going to do something with the steam so you can clearly see it, but it doesn't ruin the picture, and I'm going to attempt to make the image an HDR image.
12)
I did a bit of optimizing on the cobblestone wall. A bit of a silly blunder on my part when I think about it. Still looks like crap, heh...ugh. I also, yet again, upped the lighting.
What I finally did differently this time was make the hot chocolate look more accurate. Before it looked more like coffee or a kind of dark tea. Though I prefer the past look, I'm trying to get better at realism and accuracy.
13)
I changed around some important render settings. Something I came across that's supposed to correct the lighting and make it accurate, as apparently we've all been doing it wrong.
Ironically, it now makes things look muddled, and kinda fake, so I'm gonna have to learn more about it, but I really should press on.
14)
It has been about 2 months since I had touched this. Not my intention, but I want to get this done and move on properly. This was already rendered. I kinda forgot what I actually done, but it looked like I changed the lighting a bit.
15)
Also already rendered 2 months ago. I made the scene bright so I could see what I was doing, and I changed the table to wood. It was originally supposed to be wood anyway.
16)
Made just a bit ago (April 10, 2017, night). The quality of the render is a bit low. That's because I rendered it at half the resolution of even these test renders, but I scaled it back up.
I have finally decided to add the foam. Didn't take nearly as long as I thought it would, and it looks fairly good.
17)
More lighting changes. Trying to get a good look for the image as a whole, as well as individual objects. While I could have spent more time on this, it was time to move on, so this was my 3rd to last test render before the finish render.
Finish)

More will be added when I get to it.
Though this is a work in progress, please don not steal, copy, edit, etc.
Want something, just ask.
Seriously, it's so easy and takes no time at all.
