If you're up against a war-bred soldier with a sword and your tactic is to kick him in the groin, you're basically dead meat. You wouldn't be able to get to a kicking distance without losing a limb in the process.
No real armour had any groin kick protection, mainly because people in armour rarely if ever could raise a leg to the height of a groin to inflict such a kick in the first place. Those who could, were lightly armoured and it is much nicer to get kicked through your pants, rather than chain mail or worse- plate. This would basically equal to be hit in the groin with a metal pipe.
Codpiece is a much later invention and served more as a decoration and a boast, rather than real armour. =3
