Older than the Labrador and Golden retrievers, the Flat Coat is thought to be the breed predecessor of the other retriever breeds. In appearance, I personally feel it resembles a long haired version of a field bred Labrador. They come in black as well as liver (what we call "chocolate" in Labs).
