Hi everyone!
After much deliberation and discussion, I've decided to open a patreon!
http://www.patreon.com/zaush
I wanted to let everyone know this will be my new base of operations, and use this post to address some questions about what this means for my followers on FA and other sites. To summarize, I'm not planning to hide my content behind a paywall or change anything about how I share that content. What I will be doing is providing my work to patrons a few weeks earlier, giving access to the HD version, and also sharing more of the work in progress and sketchy doodles that I typically post to twitter. If you'd like to know the incentives involved, please do visit the page.
When will your art be posted to FA?
Two weeks after they're provided to second tier or above patrons.
What about higher res versions of your art?
Anything that's already on FA with a high res link will remain there, and future works will be posted to patreon in high def for first tier patrons and above.
What about your comics?
Higher effort comics remain a "for sale" project, so those who don't wish to support my patreon will still be able to buy them upon completion as a single download immediately at public launch. A tier does exist that guarantees a digital copy of any for sale comics I produce (and a bit earlier than standard release), and pages of the main comic which are not considered bonus material WILL be posted publicly, but at a staggered pace. My download comics are not produced page my page, and so aren't suitable for day to day posts, so only a portion of my time will go into these projects. If I can come up with short, sustainable one off comics that are posted for the patreon community, I'll definitely explore that!
I thought you said you didn't want a patreon?
Part of my decision to embrace this model that I now have the flexibility to devote time to art supported by my patreon, and with enough support, I could even make art a full time job! This has always been a dream of mine, and being able to work on content for the fandom is a huge incentive for me over conforming to a corporate entity's requirements.
I've worked for big businesses as a software developer my entire life. This is a chance to work for you. Your support so far has taken me so far already, even if it's simply a kind word, hitting the fav button, giving me your time of day, or supporting my comics. Thank you for making my time in this fandom worthwhile, and I hope to see you there!

I've generally been a critic of Patreon, but "I'm not planning to hide my content behind a paywall or change anything about how I share that content. What I will be doing is providing my work to patrons a few weeks earlier, giving access to the HD version, and also sharing more of the work in progress and sketchy doodles that I typically post to twitter" is probably the best way to do it.
I'm not his friend and I'm a completely unknown artist so I have no incentive for saying this other than the fact that I truly believe it.
Artists don't owe commissions to anyone just because you like their work. You're not entitled to buy something someone isn't putting up for sale.

To be fair; the most salt in regards to patreon stems from people that plaster huge-ass orange P's (or obnoxious patreon watermarks) over everything, reduce their public resolution to half the size and/or pixilate (think converting to JPEG & setting the quality to 50) them to shit, and treat anyone who dares question it or voices their dislike of it like a pile of shit.
Personally speaking, I'll miss the Ultra-res's since they're nice, but you post mostly HD sized (around 1920x1080) images publicly anyway and they're big enough to not loose all the small details you spent time putting in.
The impression I get from you is that nothing on FA is changing, apart from the links to the Ultra sized images being a patreon link instead.

Yea, i know. I read it in the description. Just wanted to make a nerdy comment to a dev and artist colleague.
But still, I've seen a lot of artists being basically gone after they move to patreon. After a while it becomes patrons only and the only things they still post to the public are teasers and ads to promote their patreon. Although I find it sad (for me) when that happens, I'm always happy to hear that they can make a living from their art. Hope you can make it, too.

I hope it works out! Honestly, with all the flux around FA and IB and stuff, it's probably very wise to have a more stable base of operations. It's never a bad idea to give people more places to follow your work on, just in case. I never thought I'd be the kinda guy to donate to people's patreons - honestly just because I'm so fucking poor - but a dollar or two a month to support my favourite artists? Why not! I don't even tick the rewards.
I think what some artists forget is that not everyone can support every artist. people have budgets and such and even for $1 or less still cannot support them, so by locking most of their art behind a paywall and only showing horrifically censored art, you'll actually be losing a good part of your viewer base.
So I'm happy you're still gonna post things here, even on a timed delay. If I had the cash to support you I would (and maybe soon I will I hope!) but I certainly don't want to lose out on any artwork. I'll gladly wait to see stuff and even miss out on the hi-res stuff if it means I can still enjoy your artwork the way its meant to be seen. (meaning no censoring lol)
Anyway, sorry if this comes across as rambling or not making much sense, I just woke up like 5 minutes ago so my brain hasn't fully turned on yet lol

This argument is a total farse no matter how many times it gets parroted. You do realize that we all likely have dozens, if not hundreds of artists that we like, and if we had the cash, would love to help in some way. Not all of us can afford dozens or hundreds of dollars for disposable furry pr0nz each month. And we all know that once you're in the door for "a dollar a month", it doesn't stop there.
So pick 5-10 of the good ones that you feel are worth it and leave it at that. The really standout ones who are worth a subscription or you couldnt see without it. Even Zaush is releasing his stuff still about 2 weeks after its out there, but some wait a year or more or if at all. Its just porn and art, and theres still a lot of free out there in the meantime. Really were pretty lucky to get what we do for free because art is a non essential commodity and its usually expensive. Even the price of things like movies and books have risen in the past few years. These artists have every right to want to charge for their hard work, and if they do, were not forced to support their endeavor.
Because I'm sure insulting someone for having a lower paying job is really mature.
Not everyone is able to make $2k or more a month or is able to work a full time job. I do the best with what I got, on top of all the bills I have. We're talking car insurance, health insurance, internet, power, food, rent, gas for home and auto, plus auto repairs, recent hospital bills ect. That does not make me a "fail" of an adult.
Besides, I'm already supporting several artists I like on patreon with what little funds I have left after all those bills. What I was trying to say however, is that its impossible to support ALL of my favorite artists even for a buck a month, because I have a TON of favorite artists and I'm SURE I'm not the only one. So I have to sadly pick and choose who I support or not because I simply cannot support ALL of them at once.
You know, unless I want to live in a cardboard box the rest of my life just to make sure that one artist I like can afford a small soda every month in exchange for a little bit of furry porn.

U18chan is still gonna repost your stuff the day you'll do on patreon, but still, I hope you'll make a lot of cash of it. Just one request, though; don't lower the level of youulr style. I knowany artists who had awesome style, lots of details etc. and when they moved to Patreon their works became garbage. Don't do the same. Cheers!
I think this arrangement, which is one of the more common that I have seen, is the most fair and balanced system I am currently aware of. Fair to the artist and their hard earned right to make a living, while also not leaving fans out in the cold who don't have money to toss around freely.
I would possibly suggest holding back your work as long as a full month, as opposed to a few weeks. An entire months worth of content is a much tastier morsel to bite into as enticement to become a patreon supporter and feel immediately gratified. (possibly excluding timing sensitive content such as potential holiday themed work, which would earn more attention closer to the days in question, as advertisement for your product/services as well as 'gifts' to the fans)
Either way, best of luck.

I feel like what a lot of people forget is that they're not entitled to a service they did not pay for or is not up for sale, I think it's great that you've found something that can potentially pay the bills in the long run and that you enjoy, so many artists have been completely put off posting or doing commissions because the payoff just isn't worth it, and that's their prerogative, it doesn't mean they're a sellout or doing it for the money, people have to eat and survive. Patreon isn't really something you can start from scratch, you already need a bit of an established base of support which is why I think you'll do exceptionally well. Best of luck and I'm glad to see that you're interested in doing art more as a full time thing because I'm always looking forward to seeing your work and I really think you'll get enough support to do that.
Good luck. It sounds like you're heading in to scamland (Patron) with a pretty good plan, and thank you so much for telling us that you won't be pay-walling. Got my fingers crossed it's true! Sorry to sound skeptical...
One tiny request that'd make so many people happy? If I may? Don't smear the Patron logo over everything you do!

I think the funniest posts are the ones like "SO YOU MEAN I WILL NEVER COMMISSION YOU? YOU ONLY DO WORK FOR YOUR FRIENDS?????"
Like yeah, duh. Lol my hands. My art. My prerogative.
Do you, fam.
You've been on the internet long enough to know how to do this shit. Good luck!

And trust me on this: "art as a full time job" via subscription service is unsustainable. You're going to lose Patreon income moments after the economy collapses (due entirely to idiot investors in the States) because everyone's going to panic and pull all of their expenditures.
Those who have been successful at doing art full-time in the past have mastered speedy completion of their product, produce high-value content that is desirable to many, and actually take commissions. Some of them even have jobs that contribute to the function of society in the real world, instead of just basements across the country!

I have followed you for a long while, and I have many friends in the art world. I wish for you all the best, and I hope that you can succeed in being able to make your art a full time love affair. I am privileged in that I know many artist that enrich the world with their passions, as do you. I don't support Patreon, but I don't believe in subscriptions. However, I do dedicate 3-7% of my annual budget strictly to the arts, and more when I can. But I buy, or commission, and even donate. Thank you for sharing your talent for all the years past, and all of those yet to come.
Art is a necessity of life. If it weren't, the wonders we see all around us would never exist, and nature would have one hell of a boring job.
I consider it my privilege and honour to have been able to see your skill change, grow, and mature... and I hope to continue on for a long while yet.

Not that you necessarily care about the thoughts of some rando, but I do wish you luck on your endeavor. Also, I hope that art as a full time job works out for you. Doesn't with some, but if that's your goal, I hope you can achieve it.
That being said, I *am* glad that you're opting to put larger comics available for purchase outside of Patreon. It's not something that's currently tenable for me, personally, and I imagine I am not alone, so the chance to support through other means is welcome.
Again, good luck.

I had to double-check to make sure I didn't misread it... $1 gets access to art the same time it's made available to the general public. Maybe "nothing" isn't the right description. How about, "Nothing anyone else on the planet can't already get if they wait a bit?"
Again, do people actually do that? Maybe I'm a bit shallow, but I don't usually pay if I'm not getting anything out of it. Even if it's something as mundane as entry into a monthly drawing for some random print.
(Hell, I KNOW I'm shallow, because I've dropped support for people because they couldn't be arsed to send a simple, "Thank you.")

Just one thing I'm confused about from the description: Will high-res versions be available exclusively to patrons only after a certain amount of time, or forever? So is it like you'll still post those on FA as well but only after several weeks / months, or never post them on FA at all?
