Maybe kicking the cinder block out from under the axle wasn't such a bright idea, there. All that old, rusty metal just screams "tetanus" to me, especially in a time when medicine isn't likely to be up to scratch in most places. Not to mention there's no telling who or what might be lurking around looking for an easy mark, or an easy meal. Not that I suppose these two would be that simple to take down, but better not to have to try!
I'm enjoying your take on a post apocalyptic world, though. I think I might have said once that it's one of my favorite ideas to play around with in fiction, or to read about, and I really like how your setting feels like the catastrophe is just long enough ago that things are believably battered and run down, but not so long ago that salvaged items should be mostly useless. Great stuff so far!

Kieran is usually pretty swift, but we all do dumb things now and then. He probably regretted it the moment it started to tip, but it seemed like a good idea at the time. :)
I never really thought much about it until I ran into a certain video game series dealing with the aftermath of a nuclear war. Afterwards I just loved their take on it not to mention how they would adapt certain things in ways I could totally see if enough time had passed. I wanted to do my own version tackling some ideas I'd love to see in a different light. While I'd had some thoughts in my head as to where the story would go, things changed a lot when I had a recent inspiration and added the military arc to the overall story. While the core story remained, it added a lot I think to the overall narrative. I decided based on plausibility and because I wanted some folks old enough to remember the world as it was, I decided on the comic and first book taking place six years after the war. It seemed enough time that people would adapt but not so long certain technology would have faded out.
