they were... the whole ship is computer controlled and before they got that all worked out they had more than a few accidents... Now the Marines use them a lot...

it was an aggressive development cycle, and it's so complex mechanically, but it's pretty stunning. and amazing platform the AF pararescue EMT and recovery specialist courses are held at this base (37 and 24 week courses respectively wow THAT is a commitment!)
