Have you ever read Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry? He won a Pulitzer Prize for it and it's probably the greatest western ever written. If you want an authentic, no-holds-barred account of life on the frontier, pick up a copy. I have recommended this book to more people than I can remember, and everyone who's taken my advice and read the derned thing have thanked me for it!
